Self install brake?

Is there such thing? I would love to buy a barrel, have it threaded, and buy a brake I can screw on myself after the barrel is headspaced. I like brakes with side ports so there is no downward spray of the gas to kick up dust. Is there such a thing and is the consistency there compared to a fixed brake? I would like to have the rifle set up for a can as well.

there are plenty of brakes, the muscle brakes work really well indeed, I just installed one on a .260 and it is now a very very soft shooting stick.

Badger FTE is self installed/ timed after barrel has been properly threaded.

I use the Muscle brake and the RAD Rapid brake. Both are a pinch collar style so they can be removed and re-timed to the rifles.

How about non collard styled? Or if you want removable for a can? How does one go about indexing the brake everytime? The spacers come off I assume.

JP tactical brake works great on my rifle. You can install it yourself with a shim kit.
The bolt on ones look god awful to me.

You could cover both bases with a brake suppressor mount. Just get the brake mount made by the suppressor manf you plan to buy.

For example AAC offers the a couple versions of a break mount. I am using the breakout.

Unless you feel you only want a direct thread can. In that case disregard my babling.

I found the RAD Rapid brake and I like how its slim and looks pretty good. I could not find the muscle brake with the pinch collar. I'll have to check out the JP brake with these shims that someone mentioned. I did see the normal muscle brake that is intended to be a fixed brake. I like how it is more like a slab brake with the flat on top.

Muzzle brake/ the JP tactical brake works really well, I can see the bullet impacts on the target and make follow up shots much faster. My son had an ever so slight flinch so I installed a brake on his rifle. Now he has gotten over it. And can shoot rifles without brakes with no flinch.

I installed an RWS brake I got here on the hide.
Tools needed; sand paper coarse and fine
flat board or counter top
fine sharpening stone
elbow grease
Work brake with coarse sandpaper 1st trying brake on rifle after 10 strokes when you get close use fine use fins stone to get ride of sand paper marks. Caution clean brake threads completely before screwing onto rifle

I got my pinch collar style Muscle Brake from Benchmark Barrels (360)652-2594. They even opened it up for my caliber for a small fee also.

Properly machined, if you can screw the lid on and off a milk jug, you can screw your brake on and off.

I'll get one if I don't have one handy, let me look. The Benchmark Barrels Muscle Brake works very well, it's what I use on my match rifle.

Thanks Jason for posting that! That's a nice rifle! So did you just have your barrel threaded 5/8-24 and .600 deep? Do you run a suppressor off that rifle as well? If so do you mind me asking what brand you went with.

PWS makes self installed brakes. FSC556, FSC30, PRS etc. They use shims for timing.

good point, the PWS is a fantastic brake also but seriously obnoxious though, which i like.

I can't remember the math but every 360 degree turn of the brake is a certain number of thousandths off of it. I have an APA 'Little Bastard' brake and took it to a lapping stone. I took off just a hair at a time until it was in time and now it lands there everytime I remove and install it for cleaning. You can use a shim kit but it turns into a pain in the ass and an "oh shit, where'd that shim fall to?" situation if you remove and install a lot for a can or cleaning.
