If there was a rookie forum here, I would have posted these questions there. If you feel my question is best suited in another forum on this website, please advise.

I recently acquired a rifle that is chambered for 7.62 x 51 mm and according to the operator’s manual it “will function safely and reliably with most high quality 7.62 x 51 mm and Caliber .308 Winchester ammunition” and the ammunition used must not exceed NATO or SAAMI pressure limits. In addition to the 7.62 x 51 mm rifle, I have also acquired a rifle that is chambered for 5.56 x 45 mm with similar warnings and stating that the rifle will “function safely and reliably with most high quality 5.56 mm and caliber .223 Remington ammunition”.

Questions:

1. Is all modern-day factory-loaded ammo purchased today considered SAAMI compliant if not labeled NATO?
2. How does one confirm that the ammo that he or she is purchasing is designed to NATO or SAAMI specifications? I have found little information with regard to specifications from the recent ammo (Black Hills, Winchester, Hornady, Federal, etc.) I have purchased from manufactures’ websites.
3. Is there any other additional advise that would assist me with being 100% certain that any ammo that I intend to use in either rifle is properly suited for that rifle? I’m not referring to manufacturer quality issues.

Thank you sincerely for your help.

Re: (.308 Win/7.62x51mm NATO) & (.223 Rem/5.56mm NATO)

5.56x45 is HIGHER pressure than .223, so having the 5.56 chamber is safe for most (if not all) commercially made ammo out there for both 5.56 and .223.

The inverse is true for 7.62x51 NATO and .308 Winchester. The "civilian" designated .308 is able to handle the higher pressures than the 7.62x51. However, I would GUESS that most .308 commercial ammo doesn't approach maximum pressures for .308 and would say that it is safe in the 7.62 chamber. The ammo makers do have to worry about liability and blowing someone's rifle up. Remember, that's a guess so be careful.

What rifles are you referring to? That would help in the determination.

You are good to go with 308 and 223 per h&k Operators manual directly off there site. So have fun!

Nice rifles ...

Re: (.308 Win/7.62x51mm NATO) & (.223 Rem/5.56mm NATO)

For what it's worth, I asked the LMT CS guy why they changed the markings on the MWS rifles from .308 to 7.62 and his reply was that the overseas customers preferred it. Then last week someone posted (and documented) that his rifle preferred 7.62 FGMM to .308 FGMM. Go figure...
