Not trying to start yet another to-do-it-or-not thread concerning barrel breal-in. GAP says do it so I will be following their instructions for the new 260 Rem. I have SMKs on hand in 107, 123, and 142. My question is are there advantages to using one particular weight bullet vs another?

Thanks,
OFG

Re: Break-In Bullet Wt

Heavier, longer bullets will give more bearing surface / friction. I've just used whatever odd ball stuff I've had on hand. I assume GAP put a quality hand lapped barrel on there and I would not use the tubb abrasive bullets in it.

I highly recommend AGAINST using Final Finish on new match barrels, that product does do a great job on production barrels, Throat Maintenance on the other hand every 400-500 rounds will keep barrel shooting longer, my 260 barrel has 3400 rounds down it and still shoots great.

Re: Break-In Bullet Wt

No Final Finish in the picture, just going to follow the instructions from GAP. Will probably split the difference and go with the 123s.

I am interested in your throat maintenance process.

I've use them on match barrels that were hand lapped that I wasnt satisfied with, with great results. They polish the imperfections out even in top quality hand lapped barrels you can get an improvement, not sure where you got your info.

Re: Break-In Bullet Wt

I was told by GAP when I purchased my Rock in 308WIN that barrel break in was recommended due to the process used by Bartlein when they cut the rifling. Apparently extremely small "flecks or pieces" are still present on the lands and grooves. As you fire each round they are either blown off or flattened down. Cleaning after every shot ensures there is no carbon or copper getting pressed in as well.

This is what GAP told me, made sense at the time. It sucked ass having to do it but it really did make a huge difference in the ease of cleaning my barrel. There was a significant difference in how long it took after the first break in shot to the 10th. I will be doing a break in proceedure for any future rifle as well.

That's a great line!!!

Re: Break-In Bullet Wt

That's why I suggested the final finish from experience, even though you have a custom hand lapped barrel I've had marked improvements using the final finish rounds to polish out any remaining imperfections. Check out tubbs website he suggests using them on custom barrels. I hate when people knock stuff with no experience using it!
