Well guys Saturday I made a positive step in improving my skills as a marksman. For a good while now I wanted to improve my groups at 300 yards and decided to use the mind set of "aim small miss small". So I started to putting quarters on my targets with the goal to center punch one and then be able to repeat the shot consecutively. Althought it's not a center punch and really just a knick on the quarter I see it as progress and just wanted to share...enjoy.

By the way for those who want to know this was done with a Rem. 700 .308 5R Milspec with a 16x super sniper and 175gr FGMM.

Re: One step closer!

Thank you sir...I'm proud of it but at the same time know I can do better.

Re: One step closer!

It's always fun to challenge yourself it makes you better. To many people say well that's good enough for me it's never good enough you always have to try and better yourself. Just my opinion it's just the way I'm built!

Re: One step closer!

Thanks to all...like I said its definately an improvement and i"m proud of that.

Re: One step closer!

Hell of a shot on a quarter at 300 yards. Dont have a quarter with me to measure the dimensions but I'm guessing they are about an inch across? If so you probably couldn't have dialed in any correction to get closer. Both shots are on the same plane elevation wise and half in inch down at 300 yards would require 1/8 minute elevation knobs to get it dialed in any closer to center. I think realisticly you have "hit the mark" you were looking for.

Of course you could hold bottom edge, but that may take more that 16x magnification to accomplish. Congrats on the feat.

Re: One step closer!

Thank you sir. At the time I was also figuring an inch for a quarter I found somewhere it was actually .955". Both shots were made using a hold over which was 1.4 mils at 300 yards so I rested the bottom of the first mil on top of the quarter then gave it a small amount of light in between.

Re: One step closer!

nice shot indeed, I use washers of various sizes because they are cheaper than quarters. congrats.

Re: One step closer!

Now theres something I didn't think about using was washers. Hit the washer and if its still on the target thread the bullet thru the hole lol.

I've done that with .22s before lol fun for sure. Lately I've been thinking about buying ping pong balls and putting flour inside of em and glueing them to golf tees. I might try that this weekend and see how they work.

Re: One step closer!

Good shooting"And you know you can only get better.

Re: One step closer!

i have also used dum-dum lollie pops. since they are on a cardboard stick, and they are just sugar, there is no clean up after you shoot them, unlike the bottle caps, or ping pong balls.

plus, when you smack them directly in the middle, they make a nice little puff of what ever color they are.

Lol that is my new goal now...to shoot a dum-dum sucker at 300 yards might chase that goal for a long time tho but its worth a try.

Re: One step closer!

Wow, very nice shooting, is that splash of green from the quarter, or was that a fly that happened to get in the way? Also, thanks everyone for the great ideas, I've got to try some with my kids, though I don't think they will be very enthusiastic about shooting all the candy they could be eating. But right after Hollaween I see a big shooting event in the future :)

Thank ya and that splash green was from a blade of grass that was keeping the quarter from falling between the staples holding it up...lol didnt have any tape.

let me know how it works out for ya. i am self employed and don't have time, and i would be happy with a clay pigeon at 300 at this point, let alone a lollie pop.

plus, with the lollie pops, no tape, glue or grass clippings to hold 'em up. just stick them in your back stop, assuming it is dirt.
