AICS short action magazines - .308 and .223

Re: AICS short action magazines - .308 and .223

Andy

I would expect that the .308 AI mags would not work very well, if at all, with .223 size cartriges, although I have not tried it myself.

What I can tell you is that the .223 specific AI mags in Stiller bottom metal on a Rem 700 work flawlessly. The slick polymer mags insert, feed and drop free without a hitch. The only beef I had was that they are light enough that I felt the need to add about 1 oz of stick-on wheel weights to the bottom outside of each mag to make the "drop free" a little more positive.

At the time I was buying, only AI was offering .223 specific mags, don't know if there are any alternatives out there yet, but the .223 polymer mags are a fair amount less expensive that the AI steel mags for the other calibers, so there is a plus there.

Thanks for the info Paul.
I got a good deal on JP-AMCS chassis which comes with two of their mags. I will be using it with a .223 action, so wanted to know if I will need new mags.

Before the 223 mags were made, people did modify the .308 mags for 223s. It can be done, but why permanently modify a $60 mag when you can buy a 223 mag for nearly half that?
