at 500 bucks you should defintally get sfp. quality ffp scopes just are not that cheap

If you go with Vortex, I would try to save a little more and get the 6-24x. The difference between FFP & SFP is about $200. You would be looking at $750-$950 plus some change.

I, personally, still see to many mixed reviews on the clarity of the glass in the viper. The 6-24 PST has better glass. For long range, you will want good glass. If you're talking about the Viper HS, I am not familiar with them.

I have 2 of the viper 6.5x20x44. The glass is clear they track well, 30mm and its under your price cap. They are sfp with covered turrets. Cheack out www.cameralandny.com they are excellent to deal with.
