How much would this cost?

Hi, I'm thinking of building a bolt-action rifle- these would be the parts

Stock: $400
Barrel: $310 (I would want to free-float it)
Action: $500 (brownells has remington 700 actions for this price)
Trigger: $150

All these parts are $1,360, so assume you had those 4 parts lying in front of you. How much more money would it cost to make a rifle out of them, i.e. gunsmith work plus some other small parts im sure I missed? Oh and the barrel has to be free-floated.

At minimum you'd have to have the barrel chambered and installed ( assuming your buying a barrel blank )for about 310 and the rest is up to you. http://shortactioncustoms.com/?cat=3

You forgot bottom metal, that will add a couple of hundred bucks to the cost of your build. Do yourself a favor and buy a better action (like a Surgeon), once you have a Remington 700 trued and blueprinted, and anything else you might want done, you are into it for almost what a custom action would cost, so buy once, cry once.

Round numbers, you're going to pay a smith ~ $600 to put it together. If you already owned a 700 rifle, then paying a smith ~ $200 to true it for your build would be a good investment; otherwise I wouldn't. Get a parts list together and go have a chat with your smith.

Question 1. Does a Remington 700 action you can buy from brownells have to be trued and blueprinted?

question 2. If I just bought a Rem 700 rifle and took out the action (the only part of the rifle I would use) would it have to be trued and blueprinted- again this would be the only part I would use, I wanted to get a krieger barrel or something like that?

Question 3. If I bought a custom action like the surgeon would it have to be trued and blueprinted?

Like Craven said, try looking into some of the higher dollar items. You get what you pay for in the gun world. You'll never regret spending the extra $$ if you do. If you were trying to keep your budget under 3k I would also look into a lightly used Sako TRG. Barrel is floated and the trigger is one of the best factory triggers around. Easily 1/2 MOA in capable hands. It's not "custom" but to have a rifle built better than a TRG you'll probably spend right around 4k.

1) I assume so.
2) Remington 'Blueprinted' the action when they made it. They just typically do a poor job at it.

Actually Ok, how about this, I buy a Rem 700 of my choice, then just change the stock, barrel and trigger to what I listed in my first post? would that be cheaper than my original plan? I assume I wouldn't have to buy and bottom metal? would truing and blueprinting still need to be done?

You could buy a 700P w/ a pretty good stock on it or a 700 tac and put a better stock on it. Then mount a quality scope in quality mounts and shoot it till accuracy degrades or you're just looking to upgrade. If I were to go that route, I would probably take a hard look at Savage rifles.

If you're dead set on a 700 action I would look at local pawn shops. You might be able to pick up an old rifle for 300-400 and then scrap everything but the action. You might even be able to sell a few of the parts for a few bucks and bring your costs down some.

Another option to save money would be to purchased used rifle of this site. You will general save 500 from putting it together and no wait time

How much are you looking to spend? Like others have said....you get what you pay for in this long range game. Any Remington/FN/Savage tactical rifle will get you started in the right direction without crazy modification. Don't forget about an optic, bipod, and lots of quality ammo figured in there as well.

I'm kinda wondering the same thing?? The Op has 3 open threads going asking the same question.

Dean, only a suggestion - but why not just ask about building an accurate long range rifle?

There is no cheap way out in this game that I have found..I learned a long time ago when I start a new build on anything I just bend over and assume the position cause when you try and save money you just end up regreting what you come up with anyway...For the money you are wanting to spend you could buy a used FN SPR or several other factory rifles that will have no trouble achieving your goal...Just my .02

An average mans torso is 17-19". So lets say the target is 18"x18" @ 1000 yards. That's well over MOA. If you happen to get a good one, a stock Remington 700 SPS could make that shot or pretty much any factory bolt gun from a reputable company for that matter.

Criterion barrel prefit for Savage action: $280 from NSS
Bell & Carlson A2 Medalist Stock: $205 from Red Hawk Rifles
Weaver 20MOA Extended Mult-Slot base: $30 from Amazon

All you'll need to assemble it yourself is some basic hand tools, a shop vise, some wooden blocks, a barrel nut wrench and a caliber-appropriate go-gage...maybe $1000 for all your components & build-specific tools including shipping. And the rifle should be capable of 0.5MOA accuracy.

You can 'upgrade' the stock with a CDI DBM or instead use a HS Precision, Manners, McMillan or chassis system as your budget & desires dictate.
