Ill be shooting these 2 rifle this Sunday in our local 600yd BR shoot near Wausau, Wis. The 308(top) is capable of shooting under an inch @300yds, as well as the 6mmRem(bottom), now if I can do my part and my handloads stay together maybe I can pull off a win(fingers crossed). Ill be going up against a few 6BRs, Dashers, 338Lapua magnum, 6mm Coyote, the list goes on. The loads Ill be using will be 168AMAX over 42grs RE15, Lapua brass, CCIBR primers. 6mmRem will be shooting 105 Hornady HPBTs over 41grs RE17, Win brass, CCIBRs.
Any more tips greatly appreciated.

Re: Winning the big 600yd shoot?

I would use the 6mm Rem. It is going to be better in the wind. For a match, the 168gr class bullets would likely be my last choice. The 6mm will also recoil less which is a benefit over a long string. Generally, a 308 is outclassed by every cartridge you mentioned, hence, FTR competition. Use that 6mm and you can win even if the wind starts picking up.

My .02

Re: Winning the big 600yd shoot?

I was thinking the same thing. If my first 2 groups do well and I figure it wont do anymore then Ill shoot the 308 in one of the later legs.

Re: Winning the big 600yd shoot?

BTW, Ill be going up against at least 3 fullblown BR guns, one is that 6mm Coyote.

Re: Winning the big 600yd shoot?

I would steal one of the 6BR's on the line and shoot it. I find the 6BR and calibers based off of that case, with fast twist and heavy bullets, are really hard to beat at 600 unless the wind is really rocking.

Re: Winning the big 600yd shoot?

I would run the 6rem
given its case cap 41 of re17 sounds light, i run 42+ in my 6.5x47 its a laser. RE17 gets a lot of bad wrap mostly by those who dont shoot it, only powder i have used for last 4yrs ...
it rocks.
good luck

When it shoots like this, the flier was me.

Did some deciphering and Im getting around 2950fps with 41grs RE17.

Mate

At 600yds I would be worried about them 6mmBRs and Dashers in BR rifles. If the guys with these rifles can shoot your in trouble.

I have shot 4 500m BR matches with tact rifles. What I learnt.... 25X scope really makes life hard... that was my biggest issue having a fine enough reticle (FFP) and enough magnification for fine aiming (try holding off 2" either side woth 25X and also seeing holes). If I shot my Dasher BR rifle against my tact rifle I would always score a lot higher with the BR rifle!

Cheers

Re: Winning the big 600yd shoot?

For comparison my load
123 skinnie
20" barrel
3023fps

FYI
QL indicates your load is only 90% case cap @ 2.825 OAL. 46gr is 100% of useable case cap. Your not close to using full potential of case and realizing the fps gains of RE17.
Accuracy being paramount, you have a full 5grs to play with.
In my experience RE17 runs best slightly compressed, so i would expect an additional 150-200fps and bug-holes.
shoot well

Thing is, I dont have time to workup to a higher load, found this recipe online and thought what the heck, seems to work so far and this rifle has never liked hotter loads, it has a long throat, these Hornadys are seated at 3.090", Hybrids are at 3.1", Hornadys are into the lands ever so slightly, hybrids I figure are about .010" off, dont have anymore of them but they shoot very well also, again right around 2950fps. Alliant has a max of 44grs with the 100 Speer, so 41grs sound pretty close with the 105 Hornady. Few years a go I tried the Berger 95VLDs, 39grs 760 shot solid mid 3s out to 100yds, then I ran out of them, too.
