New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Hi Guys,

I recently picked up a Rem 700 SPS Tactical in .308 ...

I'm going to add components to this rifle that I can transfer over to other Remington rifles in the future if I ever decide to upgrade, etc ...

So far I'm planning the following:

Timney 510 Trigger
Viper Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA
Seekins Precision 20 MOA Base
Seekins Precision Low Rings
Bell & Carlson Medalist Tactical Stock (Olive Green/Black Webbing)
Harris Bipod 6-9 Swivel with Notched Legs

I'm thinking these will be great additions for this rifle and others down the road ...

Questions that I have ...

For the Seekins Base I see a couple offerings in screw size ... I'm pretty sure the Factory Remington Short Action holes are 6-48 ... Correct?

Also, with the Vortex PST and the Seekins 20 MOA Base, I'm assuming the LOW Seekins Rings will work properly and be the best choice, correct? OR Should Medium Rings be used ...

Thanks,
Tim

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

I have a rem 700 SPS-T in 223 and have added the same stock and bipod. Good choices IMHO. Using a 0MOA Badger base and their "std" rings I have plenty of room for the Butler Creek caps. Seekins low is .820" and Badgers are .823" so your base and rings should work just fine.

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Consider getting a 30 moa base instead of a 20. You might even be able to run a 45 moa base and still zero at 100 yards.

Fed Gold Match w/ 175 SMKs will shoot well in the rifle.

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Pretty sure you want the Med rings (.87), i have a similar setup being built and Glen told me to go with medium. I have a 20 moa base, swfa 5-20x50 and a med palma contour (which is almost the same as rem varmint).

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Wouldn't the 20 MOA base be plenty ... Seems to be the standard around here and elsewhere ...

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

I've got the 700 AAC-SD and have Seekins 20MOA base and Low rings ordered and a SS 5-20x50 scope inbound. From all the research I did before ordering the base / rings, that combo should work fine, but I don't have personal 1st hand experience on the fitment yet.

Is Glen the owner of Seekins Precision?

Yea, I was under the impression, the closer to the rifle you can get the Scope, the better ... And from what I've seen, it appears the Low Rings will work ...

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Low rings will work, get a 20 MOA base for sure.

Yes he is. He is here on the hide heatseekins, very helpful and great CS. 20 MOA should be plenty. Lower is generally better but the difference in the Low (.82) and the Med (.87) is not going to change much in the way of sight height for ballistic calcs. Plus if you plan to use butler creek caps you may need a bit more room.

Good Point with the Caps ... didn't think about that

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Called Seekins and they recommended the Mediums for me as well ... with the 20 MOA base, 6-24x50 Scope, Bull or Heavy Barrel, and with use of Butler Caps ... and as mentioned, the difference b/n the lows and mediums is only 0.050" ... Would also possibly be more friendly if adding to a different rifle in the future ...

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Is the 6-48 screw size correct for the factory barrel?

Yes.

Thanks Guys

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

I'd Go with Lows. Have a Bushnell and Vortex FFP on both my Remys with 20MOA Base using Lows with Plenty of space for BCs. Good Luck, it'll look Great!

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

I got the same rifle as you, with a 20 moa base and bushnell elite 3200 fixed 10 power, mil adjustments with mil-dot reticle. After your scope and base and all that I HIGHLY recommend a new stock and trigger. The xmark pro is garbage on this rifle IMO feels gritty and not solid. Every 5 round's I shoot there will be one where it feels like there is sand in the trigger and I throw one high and right, same thing with my 2 other buddies that shot it and we are all b4's in the army.

Here is a picture of a 5 shot group at the end of my barrel break in at 100 yd's. Hornady TAP 168 gr. Notice the flyer high right. 2 round's had the same poi.

Thanks Guys ...

So far I have on order: Timney 510 Trigger, Viper Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA, Butler Creek Caps, Seekins Med Rings & 20 MOA Base (went with Med on the owner of Seekins' recommendation, which should be fine), & a Harris Bipod ...

I believe the only other thing that I'm going to do is get the Bell & Carlson A5 Adjustable Stock in Olive with Black Webbing and maybe one of the bolt knobs that go over the existing Remington Knob, can't remember the name at the moment ...

Thanks again for the help ...

So my base, rings and scope (with BC caps) came yesterday and I got them installed. I can get the BC caps on, but it touches the barrel ever so slightly. I tired sanding a flat on the bottom of the front BC cap for clearance but that didn't work out very well. Probably would have if I had a belt sander.

Maybe I'll look for a different kind of cap or have another go at making a flat on these. If you want to use them with no fuss, the Med rings would be the way to go from what I see with mine.

Thanks for the feedback Number9 ... Glad I went with Med ...

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

No problem man. I'm new to this whole precision rifle deal and have a lot to learn and a lot of questions to ask myself, anything I can give back or provide input on I'm glad to do it.

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

When I went with medium rings, I had my Vortex Viper adjusted all the way down to the stops to get a 100 yard zero. After speaking with the guys at Vortex, they told me to go with the low rings. That brought me up 20 clicks off the stops. I would highly suggest using the low rings if you can get a good cheek weld with them. And, I think that will be the case with the Bell and Carlson stock. I'm just trying to save you the cost of buying 2 sets of rings.

Re: New Remington 700 SPS Tactical - Questions Inside

Here is the math I used to determine mine.

Seekins Precision picatinny 1 base w/20 MOA = 9.81
Seekins Precision 30mm scope rings (medium) = 22.098
SWFA SS 10x42 tactical 30mm rifle scope = 50mm od of objective bell then divide that by half (50mm x .5 = 25)
these numbers give the following equation 9.81+22.098 = 31.098 - 25 = 6.908
That would place the Objective bell just over a 1/4" or so above the barrel

so the formula for this is:
Height of rail system
plus
Height of rings from where base connects to rail to center line
minus
half the OD of the objective bell.
this will tell you if you will clear the barrel.
Notes: Several
manufacturers measure from different places. Take Burris, Millet and Simmons. They measure from where the ring connects to the base to the valley or where the scope rests in the ring. Companies like TPS, Seekins, and Badger Ordinance measure
them correctly. They take their measurement from where the ring connects to the base to the centerline of the ring.
Thanks to the guys at SWFA for teaching me this formula.
