Has any one shot the CMP vintage sniper rifle match at Camp Perry? I would like to go this year and could use help with what equipment is needed. Thanks, Dan

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

I haven't shot at Perry (wanted to this year, but other obligations have come up). However, I'm participating in the same match, closer to home and the next one is this Saturday. For the basics, you need the rifle, a shooting mat and a spotting scope. You can also go as far as shooting jacket, gloves, underwear, etc. but I think the most important factor is practice with your rifle/load.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

All you need is to find a buddy to shoot with. Only one rifle and spotting scope is needed between the two of you as both team members can shoot the same rifle. Head over to the CMP board and post a request. I am sure there are others that do not have partners. If you are good at reading wind, you will have all the offers you need.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

At one time I was very good at reading the wind. I shot and coach with the M14. Was one of the top 1000 YD shooters with the 14. I shot on the All-Guard Team and The All-Reserve Service Rifle Teams. Have not done much in the last 15 years, it is time to come out of moth balls. I am working on a 1903 USMC sniper. I hope to shoot this year.

Then you shot with Nelson Shew. The had a good write up about him in the last CMP Newsletter. He's retired and is Oregon's CMP State Director.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

He is a great guy. I ran the AK NG marksmanship unit when he was NCOIC of Oregon's. We use to run the MAC Reg VI matches and Ft Lewis. He ran the rifle range and I ran the machine gun range.

He use to fly up to Anchorage to shoot are matches. After spending his own dime for the trip, he would sign up and not shoot. Instead he would spend his time helping new shooterss.

I think I think I read that he made the NGB MTU Hall of Fame.

I make a trip to Oregon at least once a year, now that I know where he's at, I'm gonna look him up.

I put Nelson Shew in the same catagory as Stu Clingmon (WY NG) when it comes to the decication to the NG Marksmanship Program.

Guess you remember Ron Flashhacker (AK NG) also, another great guy.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

I did last year. Course of fire is unlimited sighters in 5 minutes for you and partner, then 10 rounds for record at 300. Targets are up for 10sec then down for 10, then up, etc. Then you repeat the same thing at 600. You shoot the 300 rapid target at 300 and the standard MR target at 600. CMP has the list of allowed rifles and scopes. They provide the sandbags. You just need rifle, ammo, and spotting scope. I imagine if your buy yourself they can squad you with somebody.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

Herman, what type rifle did you use. Do you have any recommendations? : 1903.K98. Swede. or Mosin.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

I shoot a 1903A1/Unertl. With the 8x Unertl that is probably the best combination going as its the rifle with the most allowable scope magnification. However you need to make sure you have a good barrel. Last year the guns with the better barrels did the best. Mine is rebarreled so hoping for better things this year.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

Well despite the organizational snafu at the begining the match was a blast, beautiful weather. Shot a 96-2X at 300 and a 97-4X at 600. Finished 35th out of 488.

Re: CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Match

Herman, I would have like to have met you at Camp Perry. Good job with the 193-6X. The SNAFU was something to behold. I put in 18 to 20 hour days running the M14 Range at Perry for the 4TH/5TH Army area Championships to preempt SNAFU's. I can understand some of the difficulties with running that match and do appreciate the work done by the volunteers. I shot a 189 with my Chinese Unertl. I assembled a 1903 on the weekend prior to the match. This was my first Vintage Match.
