Ok guys.

Been doing some research and I'm about to buy a Rem. 700 SPS Long Range in 7mm Rem mag or 300 Win Mag (haven't yet decided on the caliber). This model has a 26" varmint contour barrel.

I am also about to buy a Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 FFP scope w/ 30mm tube.

That said, I was reading around, and determined that Seekins makes some pretty reputable rings and bases.

I'm looking at the 1913 picatinny spec base, and medium height 30mm rings.

Questions:

Will this base (1913 spec) fit my 700 receiver?
Will there be any alteration in the capability of my action (limited bolt turn, having to cut the ends off of the mounting screws, etc.)?
Will these rings work well for the setup I have planned?

I plan on shooting out to 600-1000 yds.

Thanks folks.

Yep. That setup will work great. I use it on 2 Remington 700 rifles.

What size objective is on the scope you're using? Do I need to be concerned with clearing the varmint barrel w/ a 50mm obj w/ medium rings?

R700, 308 VSSF, 5-20x50AO, 0 MOA base, Med rings:

Probably wont work if your gonna run with flip caps.

Re: Rings/Bases for Rem 700 SPS w/ Varmint Barrel

I sure do hope that the OP's set up works because I'm doing the EXACT same set up on a 700P that I'm getting done right now.

Remington 700P + Seekins 20 MOA base + Seekins Medium rings + Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50mm

If it doesn't work with flip caps, I'm screwed. Already bought the rings and base.

Although I will say that the guy above has a scope that looks to have a focus/parallax adjustment on the objective lens that makes it "fatter" than 50mm.

Re: Rings/Bases for Rem 700 SPS w/ Varmint Barrel

I think I'll go with the Hi rings just in case. For sure I'll have some caps on there eventually, and I don't want to chance a few thousandths when I can get the medium-high (.92") rings off the bat.

Seekins base, seekins medium rings, vortex razor hd 5-20x50. Clears with a #8 Douglas barrel.
also,
Same setup with a nightforce 3-15x50 on a 700p.
Go with the mediums, there is plenty of room.

Re: Rings/Bases for Rem 700 SPS w/ Varmint Barrel

Freat topic as I will need the same for 700 Varmint barrel.

Also just noticed that you're using the 20 moa base. That should give you some more clearance above the barrel. Me and the other guy are using the 0 moa base so it's a bit lower.

The opposite is true. 0 moa would have more clearance. 20 moa tilts the scope down.

Re: Rings/Bases for Rem 700 SPS w/ Varmint Barrel

Why are they all going to shoot "600-1000"? Does not know how to select scope or rings, but wants to start at 600-1000. What if they see something closer??
I have a 1000 yard range at my house and no one I meet has any place to shoot further than 100 in Kansas. It is a once a week occurance for someone to ask to shoot. Amazing!

I'm shooting 600-1000 because I live in an area with a 600 yard range that I've been shooting at for several years.

Now, I want to make use of the range I just discovered with 1000 yard targets, thus the transition from 600 to 600-1000. I do know how to pick a scope and bases--for the rifles I've owned and used. I've been hunting my entire life, and now I'd like to get more into longer range shooting. I've never had to pick optics for this type of range, and I've never owned a Rem 700. If memory serves, I DID pick the right scope, rifle, and rings and bases, but since I don't have experience with these specific components, I wanted to double check with those more experienced than myself before I spend $2,500 on parts I'm not sure about.

Clearly, you must be one of those that obtained this knowledge from birth.

I digress; apologies for my stupidity.

Re: Rings/Bases for Rem 700 SPS w/ Varmint Barrel

He is only giving you a hard time because you are asking questions that have been answered hundreds of times.

The tilted down base gives the same effect as if the barrel was tiled up 20 moa. This allows you 20 more moa of elevation up. You can shoot farther. The main reason I use a 20 moa base is that, even though my scope has enough elevation to get there with a 0 moa base, the majority of my shooting is at 600-1000 yards. With a 20 moa base, my scope is optically centered when I'm shooting at 800 yards.

Re: Rings/Bases for Rem 700 SPS w/ Varmint Barrel

By the way, if you are planning to use this rifle to compete, what discipline are you thinking about? The recoil from a 300 mag isn't bad in hunting situations, but if you are planning to shoot 20-30 round strings from the prone position, it will wear you out pretty quickly. I suggest you look at 308's or 6.5's.

Thanks for the tip. I'm actually not interested in competing at this point. More for just a hobby.

I'm not too worried about recoil up to about a 300winmag.

I shoot my 7mm WSM weekly in a 9 lb rifle from the prone and benchrest positions without any issues. I figure a ~12lb rifle in 300 winmag would be manageable.

The truth is though that ballistically, I really don't see a reason to need a 300; the trajectories can be essentially matched by the 7mm rem mag without the extra recoil. The paper /steel doesn't care if it gets 600 ft-lbs or 800 ft-lbs at 1000 yds!!
