Looking for some cool and fun ways to shoot my new S&W MP 15-22. I know there is a thread here with some cool and unique ideas but I can not find it. So post up some ideas for some .22 fun.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

If you live in an area that has shale rock in it it is a blast to shoot as it easily explodes even when impacted at low velocity. We have shot it at 300 yds. before with some neat explosive results that sends "shrapnel" everywhere.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Dot drill aka Sniper's Hide 'Practical Tactical' target!

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Eggs, hot glued to a string, hanging from 120 to 180 yards. You'll find out how little you know about 22 balistics real fast. but once you get dailed in they explode on contact. Very fun.

Asprin at 100 yards glued to a the edge of a 2x4 makes for a hard target to hit but when you do they go away in a white mist. Use something like Mentos or those sweet/sour candies if you have someone learning to shoot. Same effect but larger so not as hard to hit.

Paint balls glued to golf tees. Placed at different distances make another hard target and will again force you to learn your rifles elevation changes.

If you or a friend are good with a welder some scrap steel lenths with a whole cut just a little off center so one end is heavy slide a piece of rebar through and a home made stand of scrap wood and make your own spiners. these are a kid favorite. Just place well enough away. Bullet should break up but no need to invide any spall back on you.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

The Texas walker style targets look like they would be fun and could be challanging as the target moves when you hit it. Golf balls are fun. I agree eggs are a great cheap reactive target.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Never done it myself, but if you've every played the darts game Cricket, you can make a board out of plywood and get a match going with a friend.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

lollipops at 50 yards then eggs at high elevation at 100 yards the a golf ball at 150 yards. time yourself and challenge a friend.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Great ideas here, some of which I've tried and others (like the paintball on the tee) that I'm going to try real soon. In our part of the Southwest, it's easy to find rocks that "explode" nicely. With the Scouts, we like to stack 2" size rocks 4 high at 25 yds and then see who can knock them down, one at a time, until the whole stack is obliterated, from an offhand position. If you like to keep score, give 5 points for every rock shot in the correct order, 1 point for rocks that fall over out of order. Use longer distances for more experienced shooters. The nice thing is you make no mess, just more "sand," so there's no need to clean-up after a shooting session.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Rather than trying to find rocks that kinda explode, why not just shoot explosives?

The .22LR White Lightning targets are great for this.

Yeah, those look fun and I'll be trying some someday, I'm sure. Meanwhile, rocks win in the budget category!

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

I'm going grasshopper shooting one day next week.

I Have to use a little vacation time so I think I'll bait 'em with cardboard. They seem to love jumping up and chewing on bullet hole riddled cardboard.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

I'll sometimes put some sugar water in a spray bottle and spray my paper targets with it. When bug lands on the paper, I shoot it. Or try to, anyway.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Get a roll of old-fashioned Necco wafers (candy) and Elmers glue them to a white target and have at it. They are small enough to be a challenge but easy to see when you hit one. They come in asst. colors but I like to use a roll of the black/chocolate ones against a white target they are easy to see when you break one.

+1

I bought some paint balls and will try this soon. To add to the fun I'll be recording through the scope using a high speed camera. Stay tuned

I tried for a grasshopper yesterday Tony, from 100 yards no less! I missed,,, but not by much and I'd of sworn I hit the bugger (he was on the bottom board of my target frame), but on inspection I found he had survived a near miss. I wonder what the scale yardage would be on such a shot if a person hit a grasshopper at 100 yards, let alone a fly??? Good fun for sure!

Obviously not for the bugs...

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Just picked up a couple old table saw blades from work. Cheap/free and should be fine steel for plinking with the .22 revolver.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

A buddy of mine likes to hang glow sticks from a tree and go at them when the sun goes down. YMMV

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Powder filled exploding golf balls.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

Just wanted to share that the saw blades aren't going to last long if you shoot them @ less than 100 yards. Heavier blades obviously would do much better, but from the shooting I did today, even the hits @ 200 yards were leaving minor dimples in the steel.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

The drink packets for gatorade, propel, etc. When shot, make a cloud of the color of the drink. Careful not to inhale the dust.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

I like 8" steel plates on a base. They're mostly for larger handguns, but it's pretty fun to hit them 4-5 times before they fall over.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

I have leftover hard candy my son scored on Halloween, including the lollipops. Also, I save corks from wine bottles, have a box of a few hundred. My favorites are the synthetic ones. Work great with an air rifle, I am going tomorrow to try some .22's on them if the weather cooperates. ('High chance of sever supercell type storms. Some rotating and some isolated tornadoes possible.' In Connecticut mind you... you guys used to this stuff probably shrug it off)

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

I would always use the old #2 pencils that I had left over from school. Put those out and start at the top and work your way down.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

I have still been looking around and find that a shooting gallery type setup would be fun. Targets lined up in rows at different distances that fall over when shot. Maybe have timed matches or multiple lanes of the same target and shoot against others.

Re: Fun .22 target idea's?

I love the sounds I get from brake rotors.
Here are a few of my other favorite rimfire targets.

Try filling those plastic eggs that accumulate after Easter with baby powder.
start a golf ball at 25 yards & see how far You can hop it (how many shots & how far it goes in 10 shots)
trimming dead trees one branch at a time is always fun
Hang a bunch of those little plastic monkeys (they come in barrels) from fishing line
Put some of your old worn out cd's out there with the shiny side facing you
