I got this gun for free a few months back. I have shot it a few times and had alot of fun. Im now wanting to rebuild it just having trouble with what scope mount I should get. It has already been tapped and had a cheap rail bolted on it. I highly doubt that it will be accurate with this mount. Also does anybody know what is up with the barrel? The end of it is no screwed or anything its part of the barrel.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

Hhhmmm interesting. I would like to see a few more pics for sure. It looks like the stock has been cut short, eliminating a barrel band & sling loop. The front sight is also gone.

Is the end of the barrel expanded, & female threaded for a suppressor or brake ?. If this is a bubba'd 91/30 or 91/59, there'll be 3/8" dovetail on the barrel. If not you'll need a carbine scope rail. If the rail you have is an ati, they're very nice.

This might help you out.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

Thanks. I think its an m44.I know its been modified alot. They end of the barrel dosent seem to be threaded but there is 2 threaded holes on the bottom of it. I will take better pics when I get home. The rear sights are taken off as well. I will get a bunch of pics that might help. Thanks again.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

I am also wondering what is stamped in the barrel. I am betting its an izzy 91/30.

1. Its got a dovetail for scope rings
2. Noone in their right mind would bubba a 91/59 & destroy it

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

I have no idea what's on the end of the barrel, but looking at the first picture, it looks like 2 of the 3 holes are drilled in a very bad spot - there is a chamber in that area of the barrel. If these holes are drilled thru into the chamber, DO NOT SHOOT this rifle. It is considered to be de-activated, and it's a wall hanger.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

which holes are the 2 your talking about ? I dont think the front two go all the way through. The third maybe I will have to check.

2 holes which are drilled into the barrel, located closer to the muzzle. The third one is drilled into receiver.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

ok just checked them 2 do not go all the way through. Super short holes. Is it ok to shoot ?

I would not shoot this rifle. There is a reason barrel chamber has so much metal around it. Any weakening of the chamber walls may cause some major damage to the rifle and more important, to your health.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

any way I could get it filled in ? or do I have to buy a new barrel ?

I suggest you do internet search and learn what people are saying, say, google for "partially drilled holes barrel chamber", then make your decision.

Your rifle looks pretty chewed up. Use it as a parts gun, it does has bolt body with a bent handle, which is relatively valuable. Get yourself a new MN for $100 in real good condition, you can swap bolt body if you want to scope it. In regard to new barrel - you can probably buy 5-6 MNs for the money you would need to spend to re-barrel 1 MN, assuming you can find somebody who agrees to do it for you.

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

Thing is I have just re done the whole gun. Floated the barrel bought some new stuff, paint, marine tex texture grip. I really would like to fix it if I could. The holes are less than half a mm in the screws on twist once. Im guessing thats why the scope mount sucks/

Re: New Mosin need a little help.

I would take it to a gunsmith, & have it checked out. While your there, ask about the rail & scope you have.

That looks a lot loke the tap job on my 91/30. Its fitted with an ati rail.

This rail can be tapped for 3 holes, but the barrel has to be removed to ensure you don't go through the chamber..

Check with the smith first, but if thats a cut down 91/30, you'll have a 3/8" dovetail under the rear sight base, on the barrel.

I can't belive someone expanded the barrel tip, & hex'd it. The holes were probally for a tactical light.
