So I just bought my FIRST Savage. I have heard nothing but good things so thought Id get one. Now I need a SCOPE and a BIPOD for this .338 Lapua. Money is an issue. Any Recomendations on what I should put on this thing? Thank you in advance for any help.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Vortex PST is your best bet on a quality value scope. Add a Harris bipod and you should GTG!

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

I would hate to be shooting 338 Lapua if money was that big of an issue to affect your scope purchase

Yeah, that was my thinking as well. I see so many people at the range a couple times with their .338 LM and then next time I see them they've sold it. I think it's almost a requirement you reload for that round if you want to keep shooting it.

You should still spend some money on glass for that cartridge as it won't show itself off until you get out around 1000 yards (and more). The Vortex PST is a good option on a budget.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

I think you will love the gun. I have owned mine for about a year. I was supposed to shoot the one mile mark this summer, but my schedule has been thrown off. Hopefully, I can get out West and shoot it that far.

I can appreciate being on a budget. I put a Millet LRS 12-25x56 on it. The scope has mixed reviews - so I took a chance and have been pleased. But essentially any scope that is reasonable quality will work. Most of my shooting does not exceed 600 yards, with some 1,000 yard shoots. So the Millet works fine. The Millet has a lot of adjustment, wish it had more magnification. It's a $500 scope and comes with rings (they are a little too high).

Don't worry about recoil. It is more of a push. Any decent scope will work well, depending on the ranges you intend to shoot.

Don't used Hornaday ammo, bolt sticks. Have used Federal, Black Hills, and Lapua - all work pretty well. But have settled on Federal - they use Lapua brass.

Handloading is pretty much recommended. Saves you plenty of bucks. Have fun.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Thanks for all the tips. I'm still on the hunt for a decent scope. I plan on the Harris Bipod. Had one on a 7mm Rem mag and loved it.

As for Reloading, I have some Hornady Brass. Im sad to hear that it may not work well. A friend of mine told me to only use Lapua brass, The rest is Junk. I just wish I could find it in quantities of less than 100. If I could buy them 20 at a time that would be awesome.

Im starting out with 250Gr. Sierra HPBT Matchkings. and H1000 and yes, Hornady brass.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Brunos in az will let you order by the piece for 338 brass. I just ordered 50 last week.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Thank you for the tip about Brunos, I just orderd 20 pieces of Lapua Brass. Ill be able to do home comparrison on Lapua vs. Hornady brass.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Sightron SIII 6-24x50mm or 8-32x56mm (around $900), best "glass" out there for under 1,400 bucks IMHO, same amount of clicks/adjustment as Nightforce.

No problem. I didn't want to buy 100 pieces at a time myself. I just got 50 more to go with the first 20 I got with the rifle. I figure 70 pieces will be plenty. I have shot 20 in a couple hours 3 times so far with no sore shoulder or anything. I'm going to try to shoot a few more at each trip since I think I'm getting close on a good load.

Don't let the Hornady brass get you down, it sticks in my gun too.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Hornady sticks in mine as well. I wish I would have known that before I bought 100 rounds.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Finally got to shoot this thing today, Awesome! I sighted it in with Hornady factory ammo, sub moa at 100 yards, then shot some hornady brass hand loads, really good luck with 91 grains of H1000. Before I could shoot any Lapua brass, I realized that the factory installed scope mounting
rail was starting to loosen up. I had to quit untill I get some locktight and bolt it down good,

I'm using my father in laws Nightforce , don't want it flying off,

WOW, awesome gun though, just a few bugs to work out of the scope mount.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

By the way, I have no problems with Hornady brass so far. The new brass that I loaded, I ran through the FL sizing die the case length trimmed and primer pocket deburd. Good so far.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Shot more today, scope rail held ok, 92 grains of H1000 was perfect. But now the one ARMS scope ring BROKE!

What is up with this?

The Lapua Mag just tear guns apart or what?

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

I "bit the bullet" anymore and buy steel. I know a lot of guys will balk at this but at the end of years of shooting $300 spent on a Badger 20MOA rail and Max-50 rings was worth it. This gun...the one you are shooting...is clogging up my gunbroker watch list. I'd put some good rail/ring combos on it and go shooting. I'm running a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP on my .308 now and really like it. They, the makers, told me I could run it on my fifty...I've got a $300 SWFA Super Sniper on it
smile.gif
and it just won't die.

Buy components that will be a bitch to take apart (steel and blue loctite) and I don't think you'll have an issue.

Also, check cheaperthandirt.com...I think they are slinging the PPU 250gr match ammo at around $25. If you are going to wear out the barrel on this Savage...think about reloading. I just started this year...after years of waiting...and having fun with it.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

I do all my own reloading. As I said above, I had great luck with 91 & 92 grains of H1000 with the Sierra Matchking 250 gr bullets.

These ARMS quick detach scope rings are steal , I did install everything with the blue locktight . Everything was going well untill the front ring snapped.

I guess ill take the GG&G rings off of my .308.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Just an fyi don't leave rifle in car on hot day your stock may split other than that awesome rifle

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

I was looking at this same rifle in a gun shop the other day. For the price it was a nice solid rifle. Accu-trigger is really nice. I just wanted to see how the rifle felt, it was definitely a good deal for the price. The ammo for me is the deal killer as I don't plan on reloading at this time (maybe in the future)

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Check the Swfa display model part of thier site They had a ton of stuff when I ordered my Super Sniper got it for two fifty looks brand new I put it on a FCP-K And it will be there until I
get the skills to out shoot it.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Burris extreme rings off optics planet

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Did go with the Burris rings, have not been back out yet, I did pick up some Lapua ammo. 300gr BTHP. We will see if it does as well as the Hornady ammo did. I gotta say , I had no complaints with the Hornady brass or ammo yet.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

Thank you for all of the above information. I have been looking at the Savage .338 Lapua and it is on my short list. The info on Brunos on piece ordering is fantastic.

Thanks again.

Re: Savage 110FCP .338 Lapua Mag

BURRIS rings seem to do the trick. So far 92.5gr of H1000 with the Sierra 250gr HPBT is AWESOME !

Love the triggering on this gun.
