I have a friend that wants to buy a German Luger for his girlfriend. Any advice on buying a German Luger. What should he look for ?
Imprints? Mfg dates? Locations? Grips? Mags?

Any help appreciated.

If going for collector value, make sure all parts have the matching numbers, the gun has not been refinished.

Re: Advice buying a German Luger?

Why? For a happy or for use? Not the best self defense pistol. There was a re-issue some years back. I think Stoeger handled the remanufacture. They would likely be cheaper for use than a pre-war Nazi marked piece. Lot of counterfeiting out there. Be careful. Be VERY, very careful. JMHO

Re: Advice buying a German Luger?

I recently saw a guy who traded a .45 liberator for a rare luger.... The irony.

Might want to get an appraisal before paying significant money.

Re: Advice buying a German Luger?

I know enough about Lugers to be scared shitless of making a deal for one - they've got so many different parts, and so many different markings and serial numbers on the parts and the frames, I wouldn't even know where to look. And the Luger traders used to have a lot of forgeries floating around, too.

Damn, that's a beautiful gun, though.

Re: Advice buying a German Luger?

A WW2 vet I had the pleasure to listen to his war stories sold me a WW2 era German Luger for $1500. I was not knowledgeable at all about their values. Several years later I sold it to a collector for $3400. I lucked out. Get a Luger collectors advice before purchasing one. Their value can be from junk to blue chip investment.
