Like to hear experiences from folks who have a scope in this new line from Leupold. Looking to hear about the VX-R line as well as the VX-R Patrol.

Both are 30mm tube, and as best as I can discern the only difference is you get a mil-based reticle and matching turrets if you go the Patrol route.

I've got a Marlin 1894 .44 mag that one of the 1.25-4 would fit well on that rifle. Also have considered the same scope for my M&P 15-22.

This is a slight tangent, but how useful can a ranging reticle be in a 4x scope that might be used for 3 gun or 2 gun competition?

My logic is: why pay the extra for the vx-r patrol when you can get the vx-r 1.25-4 with the german #4 that is probably very quick at target acquisition?

Thanks

Re: Leupold VX-R scopes

They aren't heavy at all both patrol models are a pound or less.

Reticule illumination is a bright center dot by way of a fiber that runs to it therefore the reticule is pretty thick. The dot turns off on its own (motion sensitive).

The 1-4 patrol model would work great on your 15-22 but you could probably get away with less. There is a tacticool leatherwood model called the CMR for instance that has a similar crosshair.

Putting a scope on a 44mag lever gun is kind of silly to me but if you want to...the patrol model's crosshair drop points would probably translate into 100/200 yard holds for hunting. So it could potentially be useful in that regard.

I would take the Super Sniper 3-9 over the patrol.

Re: Leupold VX-R scopes

Ordered the vx-r 1.25-4 with german #4 reticle to put on my 15-22. For the 1894 I think I will opt for a regular vx-3 1.5-5. A 30mm tube just doesn't look right on top of that small 1894 action.

BCP, I concede that lever action rifles look and handle better sans scope. However, for hunting deer in the southeast good optics are preferred.

Re: Leupold VX-R scopes

I put a Leupold VX2 1x4 on my Marlin 44 and I really like it. I mounted it traditionally on an XS systems scout scope mount. The eye relief is perfect for me and I like the way it looks as opposed to putting the mounts on top of the receiver.
