Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

I am just relaoding some light hunting ammo for my Win M70-308.

I have a bunch of Fed Gold match brass that is once fired. I cleaned it, FL sized it, cleaned the primer pockets, etc.

When I FL sized it, I did not use a bushing. The wall thickness of the brass is a consistent .013 inch, or .33 mm. I will be using SGK 150 grain SP's.

What determines what bushing to use? I have a set from 331 to 338.

I have used the search function and read several of the reloading 101 threads, but couldn'e figure it out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jerry

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

.013" x 2 + .308 = .334, your bushing size.

Or

You loaded neck diameter - .002" = your bushing size

This wouldnt even be close with my Lapua brass, loaded round is .3395, had to go with a .334 bushing for any neck tension, .336 had zero tension.

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

That's some fat lapua cases. I ve used 500 of them and they all measure .3375. Use a .336 bushing and it's perfect. Plenty of neck tension. Redding now recommends .001 instead of the old .002"

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

You may need to experiment with the first case. I start with what I think will be the right bushing, size the first case, and then adjust one up or one down if necessary. The variation seems to be a result of when the brass was annealed last.

I know, neck thickness is anywhere from .0165"-.0175", measured some loaded rounds again, they run anywhere from .338-.340". So why wont a .336 bushing work?

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

Jgorski that bushing will but you are over resizing your necks. Since your brass is measuring .338-340 I would call it .339 and subract .002. This will give plenty of neck tension and work your brass less. At .340 you are sizing the brass twice as much as needs be.

If your .3395" then .337" would work. What did you use to measure the necks with, calipers??

Mics need to be used in order to have a true reading.

Well, if .336 bushing wouldnt give me any neck tension how would .337 give me any? This what I use to measure.

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

J,

The measurements dont lie and calipers arent really that accurate. Some can be off by as much as .002", not saying yours are but, some are.

I've run bushing dies for several years in several different rifles from a .269" tight Nk 6BR to a floppy neck 308 Varmint synthetic. Still use them today and the bushing size used for every rifle was measured the exact same way, loaded necks measured with mics minus .002" equals my bushing size. If you have mics try them instead. If you have a standard check your calipers.

The Wilson bushings are the absolute very best/accurate I've used with the Redding being too tight.

If using Redding bushing dies, when you set up your dies did you leave the black expander in or the silver one? The silver is the wrong one.

If the true reading of your loaded neck was/is .3995" then yes, a .337" should/would work. If your calipers are off and read on the heavy side then all else that follows would be off, to include your bushing selection.

Like I said, check your calipers, they're probably reading with an error, just like mine are

Measuring a 95VLD, you tell me if theyre calibrated.

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

Oh, Im using Hornady match bushing dies, the 336 bushing is also a Hornady bushing, the 334 & 331 bushings I have are RCBS. I dont use the expander.

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

It takes a standard to check the calibration of measurement devices, not a bullet. Your photo just simply shows that with your calipers, at that point along the bullets length it measures .243". Very close but, the smaller the object, the less the error will show.

Measure an un-seated bullet at the base of the bearing surface and again at the ogive. At some point along the bullet you're going to hit .243". On my 105 VLD Bergers I get .2435" at the base. I still say check the loaded necks with a mic and compare that to your calipers.

If your getting proper neck tension then thats all that matters. I explained it the best I could and even provided pictures. I stand by my statements as they're the proven method.

Re: Which neck sizing bushing for my brass

I measured a 105 Hornady HPBT, well onto the bearing surface, got the same .243, thats accurate enough for me, I dont have a mic, thanks for the info.

Well, you got a match 243 bullet, shouldnt it be a .243"? How much more accurate can or should it be than what its supposed to be? These calipers do measure to the .0005", Im not making a rocket engine here, LOL! And thank you, I do shoot pretty good at times.
