I just ordered a few 20 rd boxes of Prvi .308 ammo, since it was cheap, and had mixed reviews. In hindsight, I want to get much more accuracy and range out of my .308 bolt action than I do with my carbine.

What do you guys use for .308 target shooting? Wolf seems to be the cheapest, but I have heard it's terribad. Thoughts on XM118 ammo?

(Edited: Plinking was not the right term here)

Re: .308 target ammo

I do my plinking with .22lr or 5.56mm. I just finished a longer course where all we used was Federal 168 Grain Gold Medal Match and it was nicer than Black Hills I used at another course. The GMM would cloverleaf 3 rounds in a 1/4MOA if I did my crap right.

If there is accurate plinking ammo for cheap, that would be good info to have. Something like a Wolf Gold that would hold 1/2MOA would be cool if it existed.

Re: .308 target ammo

Most all of us here wouldn't consider what we do "plinking". Accuracy and precision drives/excites us, so we are generally interested in quality ammo.

For 308 factory ammo, the gold standard is Federal Gold Medal Match (FGMM), which nearly ANY rifle that can shoot, shoots well.

Wolf and its ilk are fine for "blasting" ammo, but few here would put it in one of our accurate rifles.

Re: .308 target ammo

I've found PPU 145 gr. 7.62x51 to work quite well out of my AW. It will hit a 6" plate 5 for 5 at 300 yards, and I've used it on steel silhouettes out to 800 yards. It's particularly good for shooting from less stable positions, such as when using an improvised support to shoot from kneeling or standing. There, the instability from the position is a bigger issue than the dispersion of the ammunition.

Re: .308 target ammo

In keeping with the whole 'precision rifle' concept, I retract the word 'plinking' in favor of 'casual shooting'. What I had in mind was just decent ammunition that I can use at the range while I get familiar with the Remington 700 I just purchased.

I feel like buying match ammo at this point would be a waste until I get the fundamentals down, not to mention I only have access to a 200 yard range right now.

Not when he's so pleased he shoots twice as much.

Regardless, I agree!

Re: .308 target ammo

if i buy factory i usually get the FGMM 175gr works great out of my rifle and the local store has them from $19 a box

Re: .308 target ammo

I sighted in a scope with some Russian Brown Bear in my PTR-91 to get close, when I switched to the PRVI M80 the group sizes shrunk exactly in half (for what it's worth)... I'm sure the PRVI is more accurate than me at this point.

Re: .308 target ammo

Palmetto state armory normally has gold medal for $2 more than American eagle and lesser quality ammo.

Re: .308 target ammo

Agree on the Federal Gold metal match 168.

But the BVAC from CTD can keep sub MOA, at least at 100y. It's 55 cents per round when it's in stock.

Re: .308 target ammo

It really depends at what range you shoot (100yrds, 500yrds, etc) and what eesults your ammo gives you. No 2 rifles are exactly the same. They like certian things, have diffrent tendanies, etc.
I had an old winchester that shot sub moa at 100 with cheapy ammo. (i dunno it liked cheapy ammo, however past 250 I couldnt find any bullets it liked even handloads did crappy. Dunno weird rifle. My current project a longe range Rem700 build likes 168 FGMM.
If you dont care about accuracy and you just want to spray and ammo dump , then first off youre probably in the wrong community, but to answer you: buy anything cheap, non corrosive, reliable, safe, and as clean as you can (dosent leave your weapon filthy after the 1st mag. Example: monach - smells, leaves it filthy, leaves red wax?)
Find out what your weapon likes / dislikes. For what YOU do

Re: .308 target ammo

OP, not sure if you have the 1:10 or 1:12 bbl, but I have shot the Winchester 7.62 white box out of my SPS-T 20: 1:12 with .75-1 moa of accuracy @100. Midway has them on sale, but if you can find them locally you might want to try a box.

Personally I leave the wolf / tula stuff for my milsurps.

Re: .308 target ammo

I have the 1:10 barrel. I've ordered 2 boxes of Prvi 175gr Match and 2 boxes of FGMM 168gr (the 175gr version was out of stock).

Hopefully I can get the rifle and scope all set up in time to go test it out this weekend.

Not what I was getting at, MGD. I don't want to just pull the trigger on a bangstick for giggles, but I do want to get some info on ammo that will be affordable when I need to go buy in some quantity. If there's nothing affordable that shoots well, so be it, I'll suck it up and spend the money.

I'll get to reloading eventually, once I can get with some of the guys who shoot competitively at the range here and pick their brains before I take the plunge.

Re: .308 target ammo

Hornady 155 Amax match, 168 Amax Match, 168 TAP, 168 Superformance match and Nosler CC 168s have all gave me better results out of my 700 than FGMM and cost considerably less where I was living at the time to boot.
For intial sight in I usually get the cheapest non FMJ ammo I can find from a reputable manufacturer, after getting on paper I'll try a couple brands, sometimes more, of match ammo to see what, if anything, the rifle likes. This assuming I'm feeling lazy, or need brass, otherwise its usually handloads.

Re: .308 target ammo

If I buy loaded ammo it 175gr FGMM but I'm working on a load with VLD's with a friend & getting just as good of a group or better.
