Rifle Scopes Talk to me about scope covers

All,

Am considering the Triad Tactical padded scope and muzzle cover. And just worried that the stiffer nylon material will eventually wear some of the finish off of the sharp edges (knob edges and such) of the scope... Not cool on my first true, expensive, precision scope purchase. Wondering if I'm overthinking this? I am considering putting a Scopecoat on the scope first, and then the nylon cover on top, to mitigate any chance of finish wear.

Comments?

Thanks.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

Great question. You wouldn't want the finish slightly worn on your tactical scope. Would you?

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

Youre over thinking it. Quit worrying about the finish and go shoot the dang thing.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

You have some options. You could put Bultler Creek caps on, but they are prone to breakage.

Other options include the scopecoat which you mentioned or a similar design by http://www.scopeshieldalaska.com/

I have both and they both work. I went this route after breaking my Butler Creek's and reading the many posts of others around here who have done the same.

You can get a heavier, thicker model of the scopecoat - XP-6 Flak Jacket.

The scope shield Alaska covers are thinner but do the exact same thing.

I have 1 scopecoat and 4 scope shields if that tells you anything.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

Thanks all. And no, I don't want wearing marks on my new, tactical scope. Its going on a rifle that has been beat to hell, and I am concerned about maintaining resale value of the scope if it doesn't work out. The rest of my stuff is well used, I assure you.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

I have the Eagle Industries scope cover and muzzle protector for my USO. I doubt it'll wear off the finish anytime soon. I think if the scope doesn't work out, you'll figure that out before the scope cover can do anything to it.

I had the muzzle protector cut down to fit my setup.

^^^^This.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

I have one of Triad Tactical padded scope and muzzle cover on my weapon, I have a PR 5-25x56 in it and it shows no sign on wear on the knobs or eye piece.I do believe your scope will be fine.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

If you don't want to wear the finish on your scope ever, then just turn the rifle/scope into a safe queen. If you plan on using it wear will happen.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

I waited a while, until I was sure the OP was serious. And I suppose that if I have nothing nice to say, then I shouldn't say anything at all. So, I'll say: Consider keeping the new one in the box and buying a used scope for the rifle; then you won't have to worry again when you mount it, and again when you have to turn the knobs.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

Try TAB GEAR there gear is used by everyone all branches its made to last forever

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

I don't see anything wrong with wanting to keep gear looking nice and clean. I'm like that with pretty much everything I own. Wish I could just throw shit around but that's not going to happen. Nice thread!

Except it's pretty much impossible if you actually use these rifles.

I guess if you took it out once a month in a Pelican Case. Only opened it when the air was perfectly calm AFTER you wipe down the bench and swept the line and made sure you taped off all the points where it might touch the bench.....

Of course you won't want to turn the turrets or even re-zero them, because then you will will put wear on the detents and fasteners.

Can't have wear on a tactical rifle.....that just wouldn't do.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

Wear on your equipment is the story of what you did with it. It's called patina, and it builds character.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

bikini scope cover, one size fits all they are cheap as dirt and you won't bruise your scope. use a case to carry your whole rig when travelling and you are set.

Re: Talk to me about scope covers

you make a strong case, but i was referring to scopes and "patina" which i though was funny as it isnt something that is going to develop on a modern day scope.
