I have been thinking about getting a better 1911 lately but I have decided to just upgrade the one that I currently have. I bought a Springfield Loaded stainless 45 about 6 months ago. I like the pistol but it has a few things I am not happy with. The trigger could be called a 3 stage. It just feels mushy. I also am not a fan of stainless so I would want it coated black. I would need to get some night sights installed too. What other upgrades would be good to do while it is there? I really don't know a whole lot about upgrading a 1911 but I would like to improve the accuracy while it is there. What can I do?

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

wow, i am in the process of sending my s.a. 1911 loaded, park, back to Springfield for some work myself. Originally and foremost it is going back due to fte issues. I, like you, wanted to better my accuracy too. So depending on how much you want to spend, will decide what you do, here goes my plan. I opted for the defense package. It is $260.00, which includes trigger tune, extractor and ejector tune, custom match bushing, new recoil and firing pin springs, check head space and reliability tuning. As well as slide to frame tightening for $190.00. I think those would be a good start, but please check out the website and look in the custom work section or call my buddy Amanda Kelsall Springfield Custom & Repair Department 1-800-680-6866 ext 8953.

go the 1911forum and check the springfield section. the sky is the limit at their custom shop. i guarantee you will probably end up spending more than you think you will because of the endless possibilites.

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

The Springfield custom shop does great work but their lead times are long (as most 1911 builders are.
I have a full custom 1911 from Chris James of Combat Precision Technologies and his work is great! I left him with my Springfield armory loaded, for a retrofit into a suppressor host. His prices are competitive and his build times are reasonable for now.
You can't go wrong with the SACS though, good luck with the project. Make sure you post some pics of it when its done.

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

I sent mine 1911A1 Loaded back for a cracked ejector in about 2007 and while it was there I had Springfield Custom shop do:

A carry bevel (it's still natural stainless but I would like to go black in the future yet),
trigger job (about 4.5 lbs),
fit a Nowlin match barrel (barrel, link, bushing.. all fitted and numbered to gun)
and Checker the front strap 25 LPI

It took a little while but they did a great job on it and I was happy with the work done. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

Most of the accuracy on a 1911 will come from the bushing to barrel fit. A factory loaded is capable of about 4" @ 25 yards. I have a few that were all in that range. A fitted match bushing will help but a significant improvement will require a match barrel. Before you spend the $ I would think about whether it's a want or a need. If you can't hold 4" at 25 then it's doubtful you will see much benefit from a new barrel and bushing. If you just want it then SA can certainly accomodate the request.

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

I have two full custom 1911's and they both still have colt barrels, it's the bushing that is the key. When they don't do what I want then ill have a new barrel fitted. The custom shop does awesome work, others to look at

Chris James of combat precision
Dave berryhill
Chuck Warner
Jason burton
John harrison
Ted Yost

There are a Ton more but those are some of the best, chuck Rogers isn't taking new work, same with a few others

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

oh btw sir, Springfield guesstimated 4 to 6 week turn around. I can let you know how it all goes.

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

you dont have to send it to Springfield, a regular gunsmith will just be as good, the question is, what is your intent and purpose use of the gun? Competition ? defense?

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

I've been competing with the 1911 for about 7 years and only now do I really know what I'd want if I were to have a custom gun built.

I say buy ammo and enjoy your gun. That said, my primary competition gun is checkered, has a lightened trigger, the springs swapped out, ambies, a dawson front sight, magwell, etc. years ago I would have paid to have those things done.

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

This pistol hardly ever gets carried for defense because it is just too heavy and pull my pants down to much. It would be mostly used as a range pistol. So I need night sights, a black coating, a four pound trigger and a magwell. I can't hold 4 inches at 25 yards so I guess there is no need to upgrade the bushing right now? Also lets say in the future when I get better I decided to get one of the packages they offer like the TRP package for 895.00 how much of an accuracy improvement would there be for someone capable of shooting tight groups at 25 yards?

Re: Springfield Custom Shop Work On Loaded 1911

a 1911 is pretty accurate compare to other guns, you should do a bench sandbag test first, 25 yards , I would say a 2-3" group is possible for that Springfield.

$1700 Les baer will get you 1.5" at 25 yards
