Question for the guys loading 208 AMAX in .308 Win

Re: Question for the guys loading 208 AMAX in .308 Win

Sure.

Obviously, velocity will be less than if you had a deep throat (LOL) and really hung the bullets way out there.

Re: Question for the guys loading 208 AMAX in .308 Win

Has anyone found a case where a 200+ grain bullet (with lower velocity) has had an advantage over say a 175 SMK in 308?

190g smk... the best bullet i have shot in a 308. it fights wind way better than a 168 or 175g smk. im not a fan of hornady, when i loaded hornadys and sierras to test the the sierras had a huge edge over hornady. but in 223 there 55g vmax is worth every penny

Depends what you're after.

Flatter? Not until 1400 yards

Drift? Hell yes there's an advantage.

So, for KD shooting, the 208s have a solid advantage over 175s.

For UKD, I guess it depends how good you are at estimating range.

41.4grn Varget,
Lapua brass
cci br2 primers
Loaded 20 thou short of AICS mags (front plate removed)
2400 fps single digit SD

Genuine .5 MOA load out of my 26" 1/10 twist.

208 is one hell of a boolit. Drift advantages are excellent

Re: Question for the guys loading 208 AMAX in .308 Win

To answer your question I'm going to go with what Dan Pohlabel has told me who shoots on the National F/Tr team. Prior to this year he shot the 185gr LRBT's but he did get beat at F class nationals last year by 200 and 210gr shooters. He said they just took the wind a lot better and he couldn't stay with it like they were. He is running the 200 Hybrids this year at around 2700-2740fps (32" barrel but these are actual velocities). The Heavies do a better job in the wind at 1000yds, however he did have more vertical issues with them early on compared to the 185's early on in the season. Which makes sense as the 200+ gr .308 combo is like the 90's and the .223. When it comes to .308's I trust Dan as a couple weeks back he set a new single match and 3x600 overall aggregate national records in Fclass.

If you read Bryan Litz's book he will talk about how a heavier slower bullet will have an advantage over a lighter faster bullet.

To back this up at MW Palma at Lodi this year in general the 185gr shooters were getting blow around a lot less than the 155gr shooters and the 155's are going a good 200fps faster.
