Have done business with Dave Carver several times since the late '80s! He buys at least 100 Douglas blanks at a time and contours them to what you want. Does a nice job! Prior to my buying a lathe I ordered 3 or 4 barreled actions from him on new Winchester receivers, something like $350 complete back then. IIRC a HB 222 and 2 223 sporters. All shot easily sub moa.
A high school friend wanted me to do a 280AI for him on a mauser a couple yrs ago. Never done a mauser and don't have that reamer and friend didn't really want to buy one either. Ordered a long chambered barrel from Dave and fit it. SOB shot consistently under .75moa for 3 shots and best was .258". Couldn't believe it! It now has one B&C Montana mountain goat under its belt, a couple of elk and half a dozen deer.
Dave uses only solid pilot reamers but what I have shot have done really well and his machine work is pretty decent considering price and only 3wks wait the last time. Probably not the place to go for a 'real tackdriver' but he seems to turn out some decent shooters. I am sure you remember the popular 'NOBODY' that 'used to be here'? He and friends had dozens of rigs barreled by Dave so if you can please him and his ego then you must be doing something right

Anyhoo, that is my input on the IT&D subject. Definetly not a hack job and since he retired from his day job keeps himself busy he said.

Re: Wow

I knew he was the gunsmith of "Nobody" and several others. I was speaking to Karl Feldkamp today and he had several bolt fluting jobs in there for Dave. Said he does fine bluing work as well. I can say that I havent heard one bad thing about him and people that have used him seem to be happy.

For the money he charges I just thought there were several here that might want to check him out. Some gun owners are trying to build with a limited budget nowadays, just thought I'd try to help Daves phone start ringing

Re: Wow

On a budget, he is a good place to go. He's nice, and turn-around times are reasonable. His truing jobs are only a facing off of the action face, and a lapping of the lugs, but that is a vast improvement over must factory actions anyway.

I can say though, that the chambering job he did on my rifle was a little "loose" in the tolerances around the bolt nose
