    The Dirty South
Three soldiers were killed in action over the last several days.

    The first,

"Pfc. Adam C. Ross, 19, of Lyman, S.C., died July 24, in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered small arms fire.

Ross was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy."

    The second and third,

"They died July 22 of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit in Pul-E Alam, Afghanistan, with an improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle, Italy.

    Killed were:

Spc. Justin L. Horsley, 21, of Palm Bay, Fla., and

Pfc. Brenden N. Salazar, 20, of Chuluota, Fla."

PFC Ross is in 2nd Bat the same as my very good friend, someone I'd consider a brother. To my understanding, they went through basic and Airborne school together.

Please keep their families in your thoughts and prayers and pray for the safety of our Marines and soldiers abroad.

I've lost a lot of brothers from the 173rd. Your friends will be welcomed with open arms from their fellow Sky Soldiers. RIP

    To the Airborne:

I have ridden the skies in great machines, hooked up and jumped with the best of men.

I have fought long and hard, and when I felt I had no energy left,

I have been fired by the fear that if I stopped fighting, my comrades would die.

And when I was in danger, enemy all around, I heard the thunder from my left and my right, as my life was defended.

I have never been alone. I live, jump, fight and battle to victory with the greatest assemblage of men on earth.

    To the Airborne,

To the families who mourn those who've joined the Great Jump Master In the Sky

    Myself, as well.

    Re: 173rd Airbone Casualties, RIP...

I just got back from RC East this morning. I had the privilege of working with many individuals from 173d Abn and the 3/1 AD whom they replaced. Logar and Wardak are some of the toughest provinces in Afghanistan right now. The sacrifices of your friends will not be forgotten. My sincerest condolences.

    Another soldier from 1st Battalion...

"Pfc. Theodore M. Glende, 23, of Rochester, N.Y., died July 27, in Kharwar, Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire.

Glende was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy."

More prayers for the soldiers and families of this unit. Rest in Peace.

    Re: 173rd Airbone Casualties, RIP...

Kherwar is a very dangerous district. In fact, that neighborhood of Kherwar, Baraki Barak, and Charkh is one of the worst I've seen in Afghanistan, and it's actually gotten more dangerous since last summer.

    My condolences to the family.
