First .308 gun... SCAR 17? Or get a custom bolt?

I joined this site years ago with the intention of getting into precision shooting. I was advised to buy and practice with a .22, but I have never stepped up to a .308 yet. I'm tempted to order a high end custom rifle and sign up for a class, but I'm also really intrigued by owning a semi-auto .308 like a Fal or Scar. After hearing Obama's recent comments about AK47 belonging in the hands of soldiers, not civilians... I'm worried about another stupid assault rifles ban. Any advice/recommendation?

Re: First .308 gun... SCAR 17? Or get a custom bolt?

I have a FAL and a SCAR16... I started to like accurate weapons and the FAL isn't my most accurate gun. But there is a HUGE price difference between a SCAR and a FAL, that may be a concern too. I prefer shooting my bolt guns to my semi's, although that could change if I had a GAP-10 or LMT MWS...

Something you will have to decide on your own after lots of research. 308 is a good round as it is readily available and has decent shooting characteristics with matchgrade ammo.

I know that's not the answer you are looking for but I don't think many here will hold your hand and tell you what YOU need. You can get anything from a bolt gun to a semi-auto ar-10 and spending anywhere from just under a grand to around $8000.

Re: First .308 gun... SCAR 17? Or get a custom bolt?

In the current political climate, I'd go scar 17 but who knows maybe it's all just bluster. I have a 17 and it's by far my favorite gun, but you have to ask yourself what you're going to be using it for. If you're looking to punch small groups at 800 yards a bolt gun or OBR/GAP-10 would probably be more suited to it.

Look into the Sig 716, I know some have been put off by the "lack of QC" of Sig lately however I picked this rifle up about a month ago and it has been flawless, I have not shot at any real distances past 50 yards but so far I am happy with the purchase. Just throwing out another good option IMHO that is.

scar sounds cool but if it were me ide get this

http://www.lwrci.com/p-120-repr.aspx

its think these are cool as hell, ambi controls, side charging handle, 7.62 NATO/.308, piston driven

plus if u have 2 uppers u could use a 12" with an EOtech for cqb and then switch to a 20" upper with a variable power scope/bipod for longer distance

future weapons did a video on a S.A.B.R. which is very similiar to this weapon and it was cool as hell, he cleared a room with his 12" and EOtech, then got to the roof and threw on his 20" with scope that he took out of his pack and took out steel targets at 500 yds.

2 weapons, 1 rifle, 1 type of ammo, so u dont have to have a bolt gun slung across your back when youre clearing rooms or whatever it is that youre gonna do with it haha

Re: First .308 gun... SCAR 17? Or get a custom bolt?

Rem 700 5R, Bolt gun. My 2c. I had an HK, and it sucked, for accuracy, and bent the brass. Got, and still have an M1a. great gun, but 3 in., at 100. Don't want to spend the money, to "bring her up to speed." Got the 5R, and WOW. First group after "sight in" group, at 50, was one hole. Not "one ragged hole", ONE .308 hole. I've tried to post pics, but I'm a dinosaur. It was the best group, I've ever shot. Only 50, but...

Matters little, you will end up with both

However, in consideration of the political climate, Id aquire the 17 first.

Re: First .308 gun... SCAR 17? Or get a custom bolt?

Just found a SCAR 17 for myself today, its on its way. If you choose to get the SCAR first be sure to get a few extra mags with it. I also have a .300 WM for extended range stuff and a very nicely custom build SPR .223 to round out my political storm rain jacket.

Also, the demand seems to be higher then the supply for the SCAR right now. Good luck.

Re: First .308 gun... SCAR 17? Or get a custom bolt?

I bought a SCAR 17S (MK17) a few months back and it is hands down my favorite of all my rifles. If I were to pick one rifle out of everything I own and only one, I would pick my SCAR. Its not to heavy, its fun to shoot, there is very little recoil, the round packs a punch, its a fantastic weapon.

This makes me even more excited to get mine!

I have to say that you are right on the money. I have a JP LRP-07 and the SCAR 17. The JP will drill holes into holes out as far as I can shoot....but I found that I can still hit my 10" steel MGM Flasher target well beyond 600 yards with my SCAR.... the SCAR is uber reliable, light, it eats anything I feed it and it provides about the same velocity out of the 1:12 barrel compared to the JP's 1:10 barrel. With my 308 being my primary 3Gun rifle and my 6-800 yard gun.... it is hard for me to justify anything more than a SCAR 17..... I can hit anything I would be shooting at and I can change barrels/calibers. The SCAR is the way to go unless you are shooting over 800 yards or you are shooting for tiny groups....if your typical targets are 10" or bigger.... I cant see why you would ever need anything else.

Just my two cents

Re: First .308 gun... SCAR 17? Or get a custom bolt?

Im taking a m1a and putting a EBR sage stock on it. heavy but its a great option for 308 battle rifle or even go with a hogue stock and you will get some great accuracy out of the gun. Plus you also have a piece of history in your cabinet. Put the wood stock on and tell your kids a story. ha ha
