Thinking about putting one in my safe. What companies make the more accurate versions? Is sub moa reality with one?

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

    Depends.

I've bought and built some that were "close" to MOA with good ammo. The keys to an accurate AK are more in the ammo and shooter than the gun. Match ammo in 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 is expensive and/or hard to come by so Bubba Bump-fire shoots some bargin-bin junk and complains that his AK is not accurate.

    1. Match grade ammo.
    2. Improved trigger like Red Star Arms
    3. Quality (not Russian) optics on a good mount like TWS
    4. Rifle from new parts, not surplus kit.
    5. If built or customized, someone who knows that they are doing.

Of the shelf, an Arsenal (replace the horrible factory trigger), Saiga (if converted by a pro), or one of the heavy receiver/heavy barrel VEPR's should be as accurate an AK as there is. Close to MOA with match grade ammo is very possible.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

My friend has a milled Bulagarian AK with a Steyr barrel that is remarkably more accurate than I thought an AK could be.

The most accurate AK I have ever had and I hsve had may of them over the years is the Valmet Model 62. Nothing i hsve owned has ever come close to it in accuracy. Expensive, yes but worth every penny.

I dont know for sure if these are any good, but they do some interesting work with them.

Other than them, I would go with Krebs.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

Krebs, vepr, saiga, arsenal, ammo is the biggest factor in accuracy loss, the wolff junk is just that, about 2-3 MOA at best.
A good build from milspec parts are pretty accurate AK wise though and minute of torso hits happen all day, everyday in any conditions. A match rifle they are not so if you are looking for tiny, tiny groups pass but if you want to hit what you aim at get an good AK and ammo.
    hope this helps.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

I have had nothing but excellent service from Arsenal AKs over the years, including both 7.62x39 and 5.56x45 variants. Typical AK reliability and outstanding accuracy so long as the ammo used isn't shite and the shooter is doing their part in the matter. I prefer the milled receiver models, but my stamped SLR-106FR is also damned accurate with match-quality ammo/reloads.

Somewhere around here I put up a review (at least briefly) of that rifle...you might try running a search for more info (not sure if it was w/i the last 2 years or not though so a search may not pull it). There are multiple reviews of the Arsenal AKs online that show you the quality of their products and the accuracy that is achievable with them.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

Arsenal...you will pay a premium though.
I own a lancaster arms milled ak-74 that shoots great but I would stay far away from them now as I heard their CS went WAY WAY down the shitter. I think they might even be shut down now.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

Arsenal is the only way to go. I can put federal ammo in mine and shoot 1.250" 5 and 10 shot groups at 100 yds pretty consistently.(Before my eyes started going to shit) Now, If i put my RUSSIAN built Kalinka scope on it, I can get down to 3/4" groups fairly consistently. The kalinka scopes work pretty good but the reticle is wierd. Im workin on a M.I. mount and a Leupold prismatic for it and that should complete it. Get the Arsenal. Settle for nothing less. One more thing. ALL Arsenal AK's use Styer Barrels. Basically its all about ammo with the Arsenals. American will shoot sub moa. Wolf and tulammo will usually shoot sub 2 MOA. For this type of rifle, thats more than enough. But if you want to see what they will REALLY do, get some good American ammo or get some dies and make a good reload. (If you start reloading, I would love to hear how tight the groups get!

Do you have too much, or too little money?

If an AK is the best you can do, you have too little. If you just want one because, you have too much.

Either way, Red Jacket is for you.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

The problem that everyone here fails to point out is not that the AK47, even one made by arsenal, is an inaccurate weapon. It's that the trigger sucks ass for accuracy work.

To the dude shooting 3/4 inch groups you must have it in a vice, because that is unreal.

The AK47 is inherently inaccurate. Not the 7.62X39 round.

I've been talking to a lot of gunsmiths because I have an AK project and a lot of questions.

Check out Arizona Response Systems. He'll give you just about the most straight forward answers you can imagine.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

7.62x39 is more or less a semi auto 30-30 round

The main appeal (for me at least) of having a weapon chambered for this round is its cheap and the platforms that work well with the round are simple and reliable.

Cheap accurate ammo in 7.62x39 is the brass cased Yugo but it is corrosive...no big deal just stock up on Ballistol.

The VZ-58 while not a true AK is worth looking at so long as you steer clear of the CAI builds. You want to get a Czech made one.

Agreed sir. Certain platforms are built for certain uses.

Stop trying to make your chevy caprice (built for reliability) into a fucking corvette.

You can't have it all in one package. A couple come close but the AK-47 ain't it.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

Just pick up a quality AK from Lancaster or Arsenal and take it for what it is. They aren't precision rifles. To expect them to be more than combat accurate is ridiculous.

For what its worth, at 310 I can gang the gong with my Arsenal about 50% of the time with irons. My Colt 6920 will do it for my about 70% of the time, also with irons.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

guys i understand they are not gonna shoot 1/2 moa.

the question is simply, who makes the more accurate of the bunch. Thats all, nothing more.

thought about putting one in the SHTF kit....

Can you shoot sub MOA with irons?
My AK74 hits clay birds at 100 pretty easily.
That's good enough enough for me.
It's a Romanian rifle from the mid 90's.

If it were a SHTF scenario, shooting quick and getting the fuck out of dodge, an AK will do that.
I don't see how sub moa will help you, at the ranges where a rifle will do that I'd prefer to not engage someone.
But that's just my thinking on SHTF, the nails that stick out get hammered.

If I were in the market now I'd probably take this route.
I am a fan of that brake and 5.56 is pretty common and attainable.

*I saw this setup at SHOT and really liked it. I think it definitely makes the AK system more user friendly.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

I've got an I.O INC ($300 new 2yrs ago) that shoots 1in at 100yds, cheap ammo, open sights, resting off of the mag. Good enough for me.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

Red jacket. They will build you a heavy barraled AK. It's a game changed out to a 1000 yards. I seen it on Tv has to be true.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

Most AK's are gonna be minute of man out to about 500 yards. I've got quite a bit of time behind a Waffen Werks Ak 74 and group wise it does 4" 10 shot groups at 100 yards, which is alright, but when you start shootin steel out to 500 it works very good. If you want a "tack-driving AK" than you'll just be disapointed, but if your not concerned about groups or taking T-zone shots at 400 yards an AK will work just fine. Take a look at M+M inc, M10 ak47. They're brand new rifles straight from Romania w/ cold hammer forged barrels, pretty nice.

Ok, nobody makes one but it is your money.

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

My regular ole wasr-10 was pretty damn accurate around 100. After that not so much

    Re: Who makes accurate AK-47's

Kreb's Customs made a proof of concept AK with a free floated barrel, and Galil gas system chambered in 6.5 grendel. It printed a 3-shot half moa group. However, at that point, it really isn't an AK anymore.

Is there even a company that makes a match barrel for an AK? As the barrels are press fit, can they even be re-barreled?

If you own an AK and claim you are getting 2 moa or better - please post video. I would have to see to believe.

Here's a high speed slow motion video on stamped AK. Note the barrel whip and receiver flex at the front trunion.

Rock River is producing an AR/AK hybrid that has the ergonomics of the AR15 while accepting standard AK double stack mags. I've got a good source within RRA that said these new LAR-47s are very accurate. Obviously ammo selection is still a huge factor.
