We finally got home from our deployment last Tuesday and I was super excited to shoot my new 338LM, BUT our command told us we could not handle personal firearms for the first 96 hours were home. It was pure torture looking at my new rifle just sitting their... I tried to make the best of that time and made a bunch of hand loads to test out on Sunday. Sunday rolls around and I head out to the gun store for some last minute bullshit and MY CAR BREAKS DOWN IN THE PARKING LOT !!!!! WTTFFFFFFF!!!!! Being that I was super determined to get to the range I got my car towed and hijacked my wife's SUV and off I went. I finally make it to the range and my chronograph and all the stuff needed to test new hand loads and break in a new rifle. I had my iphone with ballistic FTE sitting on table ready to do a range log. I take aim at the 100yard zero target, put my finger on the trigger, give it a squeeze BANG! It works! I proceed to get a nice 100 yard zero then, out of the corner of my eye I see something laying on the ground. ITS MY PHONE, WITH A SHATTERD SCREEN FML, THERE GOES MY DOPE! Normally I do not rely on my iphone to provide dope, but since I there was a lot of unknown variables like muzzle velocity, I decided to use FTE at the range once I sent some rounds over the chronograph. At this point I was pretty mad and decided to a break for about 10 minutes. During this time a man and his sons showed up, his son had 22lr with what had to be a three 100 round mags. I told them which target was mine and asked them not to shoot it. So what happens? You guessed it, the kid dumps about 300 round in less ten minutes into my zero target shredding it to nothing. Sigh....... I take my rifle up to the 250 yard line to get a 250 yard zero. I send some rounds down and get my zero. At this time a friend of mine that was with me asked if he could shoot the new rifle. I give him a couple rounds and walked to the club house for a bio break. I come back to see that he is shooting at the 750 yard target and has adjusted my elevation knobs before I had set my zero stop. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! AM I LIVING IN SOME COUNTRY SONG NIGHTMARE FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. At this point I pretty much give up and continue shooting to further the barrel break in and get some chronograph data. Out of the days misery I did find a decent load for the rifle. 93.5 grains of Retumbo seated with a 285gr Hornady BTHP. The rifle seemed to prefer my rounds .040 of the lands. All-in-all I was just glad when the day was over.
Today I went back out to the range with 40 hand loads, a new iphone, a new starter for my car, and a renewed sense of excitement. I sat down and took three shots and I couldn't have been more happy! Pay no attention to the .223 from some dillweed shooting my target yet again.

I make a few more adjustments and head over the 250-1k firing line. I sit down and work up a firing solution for 500yards on my new iphone with a $50 dollar case (not taking a chance). I take aim, squeeze the trigger, fire a round instantly hear a PING! I look through my scope and see the steel target flailing around violently! When it settles I see a big black spot dead center of the target! Next, I adjusted my scope for 750 yards took a shot then PING, nailed it! I couldn't tell where because the target was getting a lot of use. To make sure it wasn't a fluke I took another shot and PING, hit it again. At this point I am feeling good and all buyers remorse has left my mind. I adjust my scope for 1000 yards and send one down range, PING! AS you can see below I hit the target just a bit right. I made a quick correction then fired the next two shots which landed a few inches apart from each other! After the third shot the range was going cold for about 35 minutes and I had to go. Needless to say I couldn't have been happier! Big thanks to Gunsmith Mike Bryant For building this great rifle!

(1000 yards, winds at about 10-15 mph 90 degrees from the muzzle)
The best part is that I am not even done breaking her in. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the report.

Re: new 338 range report

sounds like you had a fun day. all woes appart, that is good shooting and a stick well built.
congrats .

Re: new 338 range report

Thanks! Day two was fun for sure, I cant wait to get out there again soon.

Re: new 338 range report

sort of not relevant, but if you can, explain the reasoning behind you can't handle personal firearms for 96 hours after coming home?? that sounded interesting.

Re: new 338 range report

The Army feels that Soldiers are at greatest risk for doing stupid shit right after they return from a deployment, which is probably true. To mitigate risk they do things like No driving cars for 24 hours, using personal firearms for 96 hours, riding motorcyclers for 7 days etc... Most of the rules are pretty legit, I dont agree with the firearms cooldown. We use weapons daily on deployments, if anything we are at our highest proficency when we first get home.

Anyways that is a sick looking rifle!

Re: new 338 range report

Great looking rifle and write up. I really like the fine fluting on your barrel - kinda reminds me of the Blaser Tactical flute job. Very cool. Love those lefty's!

Yah the barrel seems to stay pretty cool, wether or not its the fluting, who knows? I do like the look though. The guys at http://www.fosnaughcustoms.com did a really good job matching the barrel, brake, and bottom metal to the stock. I wish I got the the rings and scope cerakoted, it just made me nervous.

Contact shortbus on here for cerakoting your scope/rings. He does awesome work. Lots of guys have used him for various projects and I will be in the future. Of course, as with most things in life, it's all a question of money . . .

Re: new 338 range report

jonthomps, ty for the info.
Here is a video of my wife shooting the rifle qualifying at the local range. It's my first time using a camcorder and my first time editing a video, so cut me a break

NICE! It always makes me laugh when I see a 338 hit steel inside of 500 - it wacks the crap out of it! I set up steel at 450 one time and all I got was one shot. I didn't set my stand up properly and my Lapua leveled it! My dad thought that was pretty funny after watching me walk down and back to set it up. A 338 is a lot of gun, your wife did a great job.

Here I am taking a couple shots at 1k.

Another fun video! That's what I love about the 338 - no guesswork as to whether or not you hit the target! Great shooting. I don't have any vids but I'll post some pics of my rig. I bought a right-handed GAP 338 in 09 that shoots so well I've been scared to get rid of it for a lefty!

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

Dad and I doing some chrono-ing on a new load. My folks live in CO. These were taken during our trip out for Christmas last year. Like my front rest?!?

I LOVE my DOA bench! I highly recommend them for a portable bench.

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

lol looks like good times. Its a good thing you had a random pile of towels with you lol. I was very worried about going lefty at first, now that I have one I will never go back!

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

Yeah . . . I'm thinking about selling the big green beast for a lefty - especially if I could get another one built that shoots as well as yours!

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

If you do, I highly recomend you check out Mike Bryant http://www.bryantcustom.com/index.html
He isnt really well known on the hide but he is a really well known gunsmith around the bench community. Plus you dont have to pay for the hype that follows some of the more well known shops.

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

I looked over their website and they look like they sure do good work. I'll keep them in mind. If you don't mind me asking, could you PM me the total cost of your build? Thanks.

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

Ok, I think I'm going to take the plunge. Know a righty that needs an excellent shooting 338 LM, lol. I don't think I can pull myself away from another GAP build though, they're local and I've had excellent success with them.

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

Awesome man! Cant wait to see it
smile.gif

Yah GAP is a great company as well, no shame in gonig with what works

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

A clay pigeon @ 750y? NICE! You've got a great rifle for sure. I keep reading about Mike. Sounds like he's a great smith.

So my rifle sold - man that was fast! Yesterday I took a trip to GAP to talk over my new build and here's the specs:

Lefty Templar action
338 LM
26" #7 GAP contour 1-9.3 twist Bartlein barrel(next step down from the MTU contour)
McMillian A-5 fully adj in McCamo
Badger M-5 DBM w/ CIP length mags (for the Bergers)
Brake - still a toss up, I'm almost sure I'm going with the fat bastard though.
Cerakote OD or coyote
10-12 month wait - OUCH!

Whatcha think?

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

Looks good man! The wait is a bit ruff, but it will be worth it! What r u thinking for glass?

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

I'm going to keep my USO. 5-25x58 TPAL w/ EREK, GAP reticle and mil/mil turrets.

That blue illuminated reticle looks SICK.

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

My 338 lap is almost the exact match. Stiller tac338 action with kreiger 28 in. Barrel (no flutes) mac a.5 stock with Jewell trigger, but no muzzle brake. I have a TBAC 338 can. shoots like a dream. Waiting on the new reloader 33 powder. I also am shooting hornady 285's.

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

Hoping to try the RL33 soon as well, or at least get some feedback

Re: new 338 range report Stiller TAC 338 Build

Hey Dirt,
Thanks first of all for your service.
I guess your first day to the range was a bug-day (sometimes you're the windshield....) Glad you persevered and had a good time. I watched your videos, and told my wife about them. She hasn't gotten up the courage to try mine yet, but probably will soon. -
I built a Rem 700 with a 34" Lilja fluted barrel, and a NightForce 8-32x56 Zero Stop glass. I am having trouble finding a range to go to longer than 300yds near home.
Hope you have a lot of fun with the rig!!!
I also have been trying to figure out a good load for this rifle. Just read yesterday on SH here how to do a ladder test, and can't wait to get home and have time to make some ammo up for this.....
