Les Baer monolith .308

Picked up a Les Baer monolith and shot it for the first time today. Just wanted to show some pics. Best group was 5 of my Amax handloads. The FGM 168s I picked up from academy were all 3/4-1 moa. The last round in the mag always flys on me. I should have loaded 6. Really like this rifle, but it is a beast. Heavier then my LMT MWS and OBR I have had in the past.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

Ben; glad you're enjoying your rifle.

Try the 175 SMKs. Or the AMAXs. My monolith really likes both and will shoot .5 or better consistently with them.

The last round flier issue with .308 ARs has been discussed in a number of places without much agreement among the posters. One partial consensus believes that mags are the issue. My rifle doesn't exhibit that sensitivity but it doesn't seem to like Magpul's though that's what Les furnishes with the rifle (failed to hold open on last shot, occasional failure to lock back during manual cycling on an empty mag). No problems at all with Larue's metal mags or those from DPM (for whatever reason). You might try playing with mags to see if that'll help with that last round flier.

Have fun with your new toy. And yes, its HEAVY. Should have warned you. Sorry

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

Very nice.
I have a LB 18" Match that runs flawless and is very accurate as well. I have had a hand full of 308 semi's including a couple of customs and the LB is the best yet.

Enjoy!

Yep, good question since it certainly monolithic. LMT might have a fuss.

+2. It'll be interesting to see what LB does in light of the LMT patent issue.

Man that is a great looking gas gun! And a seriously good group. How effective is the brake?

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

The brake works good but no better to me then others out there. If you want a brake from LB, this is what you get as there are no other options (even if you supply them). I would prefer the SF to use a QD can, but that can be added later.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

Throw a TBAC 30-BA on that sexy bitch!

Having dealt with Les on a few pistols - Les is of the opinion that if it is sitting on his shelf it is "his".

Good luck

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

What? A rifle not made by GAP actually shoots? I cannot imagine it from what I read here! Amazing!
Just kidding, nice rifle, nice shooting.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

I am friends with a good friend of Les. Les gave him one of these, and Craig loaned it to me for a while.

Incredible rifle. Hammered bugholes at 200 yards with 175 FGMM. Didn't have any issue with the last round from the mag.

Maybe it's the different recoil of the final round?

Advantages: its one solid seamless piece

Disadvantages: If I dont find an extended barrel nut wrench, im stuck.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

Is that a Magpul RSA on your gas block? Doesn't seem to me like it'd be a good spot to put a sling mount. Especially a precision rifle with a mono upper.

LOL! Maybe the planets are in alignment. (Never seen an LB that couldn't hold it's own.)

I get that the handguard and receiver are one solid, seamless piece; but how/why is that better? The barrel is still attached to the receiver in the same fashion, isn't it? What does monolithic offer that a free-floated handguard doesn't? Not trying to be a wiseass, just trying to learn.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

I was totally unaware that Les Baer had any monolithic uppers...

Jeez

Scope mounting, for one. You don't require cantilevered mounts and can place your scope pretty much anywhere on the rail to optimize eye relief.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

Damn I have one on order should be here in November
What barrel length is yours
How is the recoil

Mine is 20, but im cutting back to 18 and going with a surefire brake. I like it better the Les's.

Yep, they all say that is right. The Mega barrel nut wrench fits perfectly.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

Those are great looking guns! I have a swat model with 24" barrel and compensator. Compensator works pretty good... I can spot all my hits to steel from everywhere out wherever. I also have a Gap with 18" barrel, and when I shoot that one, I need a spotter. You can only spot hits from 500yrds or further with the GAP. The BAER is a tack driver. Shoots better groups than my GAP. I am no expert shooter, but with my shooting and FGMM, my groups with baer are smaller. So far, I love it. just trying to find some accurate loads for it.

In Les' case its true. He's an old friend, been building me custom stuff for >20yrs. The major parts are built in house.

My monolith is an 18" .308 with integral brake. Shoots really well with FGMM 175s. Also with SWA 175s in the Federal but NOT the military brass loads (the latter exhibited pressure signs).

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

I have heard nothing but great things about that set up.... looks like it shoots well too

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

I've met the smith at Baer who builds all their ARs. Hell of a nice guy. They build all their stuff in-house, and as a product owner their workmanship is over the top. Plus they're at a lower price point than you might expect. They finish all their products by hand with files - I was in the shop and it's nothing but files, files, and more files.

Re: Les Baer monolith .308

sucks about the mega monolithic upper--it is freakin beautiful.

I am really bummed I could not get a monolithic 308 upper

I have that same issue with my LBC .264 with the flyer...except with me it's my first round and I don't get it all the time...I'm beginning to think that it's a mental thing, I've only put 110rds down the barrel, and after my first 40rds of trying to remember how to drive a AR, all 5rd groups for the rest of the day were 1/2 or less mostly 1 hole.. Im very pleased with my Les Baer and I would challenge ANY AR Manufacturer / Builder to beat the Baer. The day I shot I was with another Hide/Calgun member with almost the exact same set up made by JP both from a bench with a front rest and a rear sand bag.. and Im still waiting to hear back from Ben at JP to him give him shit..lol There was no comparison. I shot both rifles with Hornady Match 123 Amax and the LBC blackhills 123 Amax. I did 3 5rd groups of each type of ammo out of each AR.. The JP only once produced a 1/2 group and it was with the LBC ammo. I can only think of two Advantages I had over the JP. The Bear has a 24'' barrel and my glass was USO, the JP was 22" and a DMR...So to sum it all up, at the end if the day to get CONSISTENT RESULTS that are the same as my custom .260 bolt rifle ......Yeah I'll say the Baer is the Best.
