Re: 10/22 upgrades?

Those are all good upgrades except the vq trigger group. just get a power custom target hammer it will cost around $35 instead of 200ish. put the money saved to a green mountain barrel. you will have a tack driver.

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

Just by replacing the hammer you will get a much lighter crisper pull. its much less as expensive and gives you almost as good of a trigger. that money would go far elsewhere. if you want the best trigger out there get a kidd.

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

Tac sol barrels are marginally better than the factory One. green mountain is th best bang for buck as they are around $100 for a really nice barrel. Clark is another good barrel but more expensive and Kidd is the best bit just like the trigger group its the most expensive.

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

I was in your shoes a bit ago. I had an extra USO SN3 laying around so that ended up going on top of the rifle.
I ended up going VQ on the bolt release. I have some sort of red bolt buffer that was only a few bucks. I am using the original extractor and bolt assembly.
I got a Kidd trigger group and green mountain barrel too.

For me, I suck without a good trigger, so I opted for the best. I skimped on the barrel but still have a 1-2 minute gun.

ALSO, consider a stock if you are running the stock that all base 10/22s come in. I went with a Boyd's Tacticool.

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

Being the obsessive compulsive that I am and having an insatiable lust for rimfire, I've tried a lot of different things with 10/22s. After having seen the performance of my 10/22, I've actually had two guys (who bought complete Kidd rifles and were disappointed)ask me to build their rifles.

From what I've seen, Green Mountain barrels are hit and miss. I've tried five, so far, and of those five, two were pretty good shooters and one was really good. To me, I'd rather spend $200 on a barrel that I know will be a good shooter, than $100 on a barrel that may be a good shooter. For me, Kidd is it for barrels. The Volquartsens are very over priced and don't shoot any better (or worse). The Clarks are nice too, but I prefer the chamber on the Kidd. It just seems to do better with a broader range of ammo. Oddly enough, I do believe that all three that I just mentioned are cut from Walther blanks.

As far as the trigger goes, Volquartsen should be ashamed to charge that much money for their trigger. It's no better than the feel you get with a $40 upgrade trigger from Clark. If you want the ultimate 10/22 trigger, the Kidd two stage has no peers. That is one part that you will buy once and never look back.

Thanks for the info! I've been eyeing parts to upgrade mine!

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

Raider, go to Rimfire Central and read about the various pieces/parts. I find the extremely long mag release to be cumbersome. There is a guy on there that does bolt reworking to make the recess for the case head more compatible, and also re contours the rear of the bolt for reliability. The buffers are available on E-Bay for much less. I bought four 12 inch pieces of that rod for 10 bucks. There is a few lifetimes supply there. In addition, when the gentleman reworked my bolt, I had sent him one of the extractors to install...he returned it after slightly modifying the factory and said that the Vol extractor reduced reliability in my rifle. You will find articles there on modifying your trigger...using the information I have a 1 3/4 lb trigger for about 2.00 dollars invested. Spend your money on the bolt mods, and a great barrel. Bed the receiver and rear of the barrel. I find a fore-end barrel pad with slight upward pressure really shrinks my group. JMHO

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

thanks for the pointers guys,

i ended up ordering:

vq auto bolt release
vq extractor
buffer from ebay
PWS T3 Mag release
power custom hammer and sear kit

im currently trying to find a tactical solutions threaded matte black barrel, and that should round out my build.

do you guys think that a replacement v-block is necessary if i have a free floating stock already?

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

I'd wait on the v-block and check your performance first.

Re: 10/22 upgrades?

I don't think that the V-block should be necessary, if you have a barrel with a good fit to the receiver. Just remember that when installing the stock block, you shouldn't over tighten the screws. You should only use enough torque to keep the barrel from creeping out of the receiver. I use something around 10 in-lbs.

If you have a loose fit between the barrel and receiver, using a V-block to apply upward pressure on the barrel can lead to feeding problems in extreme cases. The best way to go is to use a barrel that requires somewhat of a press fit into the receiver. If you have a barrel with a good, tight fit and you are still having trouble floating your barrel, you're going to need to do a good bedding job on the stock to keep the back of the receiver from moving under the weight of the barrel.

I've built several 10/22s using Kidd barrels and have never needed to use a V-block and all of my barrels are completely free floated.

My Kidd barrel is just a few dollar more than a TacSol. May want to look into it.

I would not upgrade the V-block as the TacSol is very light. Just don't overtighten the factory block.
Kidd barrels fit very tight into factory receivers. So much so, I have had to use a rubber mallet on the receiver to get the barrel seated.

Last build I did:
