how many of you guys carry a multi tool with you at all times? I used to always carry a folding knife with me everywhere I go, but recently I have swtiched to a leatherman. Im finding that it comes in much more handy than my knife, but I feel like such a fruitcake carrying it.

Re: multi-tool

I do. Started when they first came out. Guess it depends on necessity.

Re: multi-tool

I carry one in a bag. I carry a folder every where. A small pair of vise grips is also vey handy.

Good luck

Re: multi-tool

I think half the people in this county carry a leatherman all the time.

I carry the Leatherman Fuze model myself. It's small enough but good enough to cut barbed wire. Handy when idiot horses get caught in the wire.

The newer ones seem to hold an edge better then the one I had in the 80s.

Re: multi-tool

I've a broken Leatherman around here somewhere, jaw snapped off....my Gerber is still going strong.

Useful tools.....

Re: multi-tool

I to have one in my grab bag if I'm going to the woods or just out not knowing what I may need. I just you could call it a bug out bag but not quite. I keep all the handy things I may need in there. Ammo/multi-tool/fire rod/knife/lighters/extra loaded mags....

Yup, got one of these too, I love it.

Re: multi-tool

I still have my issue one from OIF V. Great tool, useful in alot of situations. I think i am going to upgrade to the skeletonized version though.

Re: multi-tool

Leatherman all the way for me. Cut my hand on one 11 years ago before they had the locking blades (my stupidity). Been using one ever since. Carry one on my duty belt and another in my personal car.

Re: multi-tool

Leatherman all the way! Carry one all the time have different models. Basic carry is there Super Tool you can't go wrong with a leatherman and great service from the factory.

Re: multi-tool

I've got a couple of different Gerber's. I've used one at work daily for 10 years and keep it on my belt. If I'm hiking, hunting or shooting I keep a different one in my pack.

Re: multi-tool

I've had a leatherman wave in my glove box for 10 years, use it occasionally - sharp as can be...

Pretty handy tool to have, I am going to pick up a Gerber version fairly soon to throw in the to-go bag.

Re: multi-tool

I'm on my second Leathermam. Mine goes everywhere with me! It's the go too tool when I'm working and need a screwdriver or whatever in a pinch. Curently I'm useing the "Blast"

Send it ack to Leatherman, they will send you a new one.

I always carry one with me.

Re: multi-tool

Leatherman- supertool, I have carried it for years a little big for the pocket but has saved the day to many times to count.

Re: multi-tool

i would say that on a day to day basis I really only use a knife, needle nose pliers, flat head and philips head screwdrivers, and a can opener. Out of the Gerber and Leatherman brands, which ones offer the most sturdy locking mechanism for the tools?

Re: multi-tool

I had a Leatherman when they first came out. It wasn't very comfortable if you applied a lot of pressure. Never had a problem with my Gerber.

Re: multi-tool

Can't stand leathermen... I'll take SOG any day of the week...

SOG isn't anti-gun, and SOG will send you replacement parts in the field if there is a warranty issue. Leathermen requires you to send the tool to them then they'll send a replacement. Works just wonderful when you're deployed and you never know when you may need that tool. Broke a single item on your Leathermen? You get to live without the whole tool for a month or more. Broke a single tool on your SOG? You get to use the rest of the tools until SOG gets the replacement to you and you get the time to replace it.

How do you figure this? I broke the small screw driver on a Leatherman tool and the rest of the tool worked just fine. Breaking one piece doesn't incapacitate the rest of the tools.

Re: multi-tool

I carry a Gerber Legend 600 everyday at work. I would be lost without it. In fact I have 2 of them and 3 other different models just in case. Also, at least one in the range bag and rifle case. Seems I have a multi tool problem.

Re: multi-tool

I tried carrying a leatherman for a while but the weight became an issue. i have the big super tool 300. now it just sits in the glove box of my pickup. switched to benchmade mini griptilian pocket knife but would consider one of the smaller ones but they are a bit pricey.
anybody have a favorite without the weight issue?

Are the tools user changeable on the leatherman? No, if you break one, in order to get it replaced you must send it to leatherman for them to do the replacement. On the SOG, if something breaks they send the replacement tool in the mail and you replace it yourself.

This is where you may have gotten confused. With the leatherman, you send your tool off, wait 2 weeks+ for leatherman to get it, wait a week or more for them to fix it then 2 more weeks to get it back. That is 5+ weeks you're without your entire multi-tool. SOG, you've only lost use of that specific tool you broke until the replacement arrives in the mail and you get the chance to replace it.

Follow me now?

BTW, SOG's compound plier jaws? AWESOME!!! Lots of squeezing power with them!!! Lot's more than my leatherman super-tool...

Re: multi-tool

I have a leatherman mut and I love it. I take in my pack that goes everywhere with me. Ive used it for all sorts of little tasks especially when out shooting.

Re: multi-tool

I vote for SOG and I don't carry them around on some batman belt just range/field bags and glove box.

Re: multi-tool

i have broken gerbers, all types of learthermans and a SOG. I got tired of buying them and switched to the vice grip multi-tool. I can buy three for the price of a gerber. I still carry a knife though- william henry B12.

Re: multi-tool

Have a SOG in my BOB, carry a small letterman for the scissors, a folder & a small pen like screw driver. Prefer to have smaller version that mostly do one function, they seem to last longer & be better built.

Re: multi-tool

have a leatherman pst ll that is my daily carry cause its light in the pocket along with my blackhawk rescue tool, my gun bag I carry my gerber

Re: multi-tool

Used to carry a Gerber and a mini Mag-lite every day. Now just my Benchmade folder. Still have a Gerber multi-tool, just keep it in a pack now.

Re: multi-tool

I carry the Leatherman Wave on weekends (it would look quite awkward in cubicleville besides being against corporate policy). I always have a Leatherman C33LX on me...which hasn't confronted policy yet, so to speak. One with a stainless clip, and one with a matte black finish depending on how much it needs to blend into the pants.

Re: multi-tool

Gerber is what I carry. I bought a couple and that's what the Army is giving me now so I'll continue to use it. I'm sure a Leatherman does the job just the same.

Re: multi-tool

I got a gear driven SOG used in '00 or '01 and used it throughout my time in the army. I carried it around quite a bit then and it always went in the ruck. Now it just stays in a ruck or bag if I go out. I carry a mini Gerber Applegate/Fairbairn, nice little pocket knife.

I suppose if I had more odd stuff to work on while out and about I'd still carry it. Great little tools, far more useful I think than those big field knives a lot of guys carried religiously.

Re: multi-tool

Got scars from the original Leatherman, its still in my fishing kit. I use the Leatherman Wave now, its real handy for what it is. Naturally, you still need the right tool for the job, but with the Leatherman you can half-ass your way through life with one tool.

Re: multi-tool

I use Leatherman Tools and, with all politics aside, I think they're great tools with useful features. To date I've owned a PST, Super Tool, original Wave, Micro, two new version Waves, and a MUT. Out of all of those I've only broken one, first it was one of the small screwdrivers on my original wave when I was tried to use it to tighten a swivel stud. I kept it for a years, using the other tools until I broke the serated blade off opening a paint can. I sent it back to Leatherman for repair and it ended up getting it replaced with a new version Wave. The total time for me, being CONUS, was about 10 days including a weekend to get the new tool. Most of that time was shipping because it arrived on a Tuesday and when I called on Wednesday they said it was already on its way back to me.

I use my other Wave everyday at work for everything from tightening nuts to a using it as a door stop and so far no issues.

I've owned a couple of Gerber Multi-tools and they were more comfortable then the original Leatherman PST but the new designs pretty much make it a moot point. I also like how the Leahtermans are a one handed opening for the most of the blades and a couple other tools. I did break one Gerber, I'm not saying all Gerber's are a piece of shit because of that but I just prefer the Leatherman tools.

Re: multi-tool

I've been incredibly happy with my SOG. I've had it since 2009 and it's always served me well. I know how you feel about wearing it on your belt though. Mine's always in my go-bag, shooting kit, vehicle, etc. The SOG is a solid multi-tool.

Re: multi-tool

I have carried several and broke alot of gerbers. Not thier fault as I am hard on stuff. I use a Vise grip multi tool now. reasonably priced and very tough.
