Ok. First day at the range. It was busy so I started at the 50yd stand. I zeroed about 3 inches high and got a good 5 shot group. Anything farther I wasn't even hitting the stand. I pulled the bolt and bore sighted at 100 once it opened. Still nothing. I'm confused angry and outta ammo til next weekend. The rifle is a Remington 700 sps tactical, Bushnell 3200 elite 10×40, seekins precision 20 moa rail and seekins rings. Someone help please!!!!!!!

Re: what'd i do wrong???

Everything was tight and has loctite on it. Plus I was using Federal gold medal match 168gr bthp ammo. I forgot that part.

Re: what'd i do wrong???

Hmmmm..... I was shooting off my bags on a bench. Maybe I should use a bipod next time?

Re: what'd i do wrong???

I don't think you can get bipod hop without a bipod. The swivel stud can cause the rifle to hop under recoil though. Maybe you moved the rifle so the stud was just ahead of the bag and when the stud hit it caused a jump?

Re: what'd i do wrong???

What size target were you using @ 100 yards.

To zero at 100 yards, depending on the height of the scope over the bore, at 50 yards your impact should be LOW at 50 yards.

The bullet should be climbing up in its arc to hit at 100. Unless you have a big target, you might have been over shooting.

Lets assume your shooting 168s at 2600 fps. If the gun is sighted in 3 inches high at 50 yards it should be about 6 inches high at 100 and on at about 325 yards.

Just a guess based on the limited info you provided.

Try zeroing 1 inch low at 50 yards and see what happens.

Re: what'd i do wrong???

Thanks. I'm going back out this weekend to give that a shot. Also going to take a poster board with a grid drawn on It. If I miss that then I'm in deep shit. What other info should I have provided? I'm new to this.

Re: what'd i do wrong???

Danny-

It costs a little bit, but the single cheapest thing you can do to improve is to subscribe to the on-line lessons available here. There's a real wealth of very valuable info available to you 24 hours a day.

Sounds as if you had a simple zero problem, but if you're shooting with a partner, enlist his help, and also try a little "ball and dummy" coaching as well. It's an invaluable training aid.

You'll do better next time!

Cheers... JIm

Re: what'd i do wrong???

OP,

Once again there are as many opinions about what you should do as there are, well, you know. But, so far, from the information you've provided, Kraig's advice seems the likely solution to your problem.

Re: what'd i do wrong???

You are much too high. You should be low at 50..at least 1". You will probably still be high at 100. When bore sighting down the barrel, you want as little movement from the rifle as possible. It helps to have a buddy turn the dials as you sight down the tube.

Re: what'd i do wrong???

Good deal guys. Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna give it a shot this weekend!
