Hello all,

Lately, I've found (or what I believe to have found) that I love shooting scopes with forgiving/generous eyeboxes, caring more so about that than many other factors.

What scopes have the 'best' eyeboxes in the high power (20x)+ range?

I believe you would be happy looking through both Zeiss and Swaro.
pretty forgiving on even the lowest end models.

I agree with you Madap, eyebox makes a big difference to me.
My Leupold 4.5-14x50 is the limit that I can handle. Getting a Vortex 6-24x50 tomorrow and I hope its ok.

That zeiss 6-24x72 looks fantastic. Do you own one or is it reputation alone that it is being suggested?

that is one of my only problems with the vortex pst 6-24 is the eye box is tight. If you set it right its is fine but a little more movement would be nice

I got my Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP mounted up and out to the range. At 24x the eyebox is fairly tight. If I do my job everything is fine, but it will let me know right away if my cheekweld is off.

Agree that the eye box is tight on the PST. Most of my scopes are NF NXS and I occasionally run into eye box issues when prone, as I tend to crawl the stock or put more cheek pressure on it.
The Zeiss and Hensoldt scopes do have great boxes.

Just curious as to where the hell the term "eye box" came from?

Until about a month or two ago I had never heard that term, and I have been doing this for over 20 years. Just curious if there was some major publication/article that used this term.

I have several 6x24-72 Zeiss and have tried others but if you want the best in that mag. range nothing can touch it.

Could very well have come from Nikon, they have been using the term for at least 4-5 years... 'eye box technology' may have been a marketing thing that just stuck. Leupold, Vortex, and Tasco/Simmons also use the term for their scopes as well. All of those sell at Cabelas, Bass Pro Shop, Dick's sporting goods... The descriptions are then posted on their sites as well. Word spreads fast.


Not positive who started it... But my guess would be Nikon

Edit: Bart from Nikon Pro Staff is on here... He might be able to answer this-

I think I heard it on here. I was just looking for a term to describe the generosity of the... eye relief I guess?

Most all optical companies that I have seen use the term "exit pupil" to describe the diameter of the area projected on your eye at the given eye relief.

Just was curious because the image projected onto the eye is anything but a box, it is a circle.

Frank said it once and it settled in the collective with the familiarity of a term used since childhood....He tends to have that effect on people. Which is cool....

Boxes can be round too. Like cake boxes or hat boxes...

I coined it John, lol you're welcome.

Exit pupil was too hard to explain, eye box is easier to explain.

Verdict: Confirmed. The term "Eyebox" was coined by firearms expert and trainer Frank Galli sometime in the early 21st century to describe the horizontal and vertical viewing constraints imposed upon a shooter while positioned behind a long range rifle scope.

Someone please forward the appropriate data to Wikipedia.

I think that you will find the Hensoldt scopes will have the most forgiving eye box out of the bunch.

Hensoldt, hands down.

I T&Ed the Sightron 3 a few years back, it wasn't bad, but not nearly as forgiving as the Hensoldt.

I use S&B's now but Premier by far has the most forgiving eyebox I've used...
