Need opinions on this stock...

Hello,
I'm looking at possibly getting this stock in the future for my .300 win mag. Blackhawk! Axiom Stock Most of the reviews I have read said this was great considering the cost(roughly $155 including shipping). The main purpose is to suppress the recoil a bit. I just want to know if anyone else on here has heard whether or not this is a good buy or if there is another stock that would be better(please keep in mind I have a very tight budget). Thank you!

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Have you tried adding a limbsaver recoil pad to your current stock? There is a 1" version that absorbs a good bit of the impact.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

I have not added a limbsaver yet. I'm waiting to see if this might do a better job. It's still an option though

IMO, pretty much everything made by Blackhawk is junk. The Limbsaver is a good recoil pad. You might also want to consider putting a muzzle brake on it.

If you add the muzzle brake and the limbsaver you definitely should be good and your total cost would only be about the same or a little more than buying that stock depending on what brake you go with. No need to spend a bunch of money on a brake. Everyone seems to be pretty happy with the brake that RWS on here offers for $45. You would just need to figure out someone to thread your barrel. Finding someone local would save a decent amount on shipping costs.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Best to get a brake of your choice and have a reputable gunsmith install it. In one of your posts you mentioned you have a 300 sps, is it a sporter contour barrel? Just that brake suggestions will vary based on the size. Anyway, a good brake should reduce the recoil significantly, but they are obnoxiously loud.

As for the axiom, no way. Put the money in a scope fund.

One thing you can try in the interim is get the limbsaver, and while you switching out the buttpad, fill the void in the stock with a bag of lead shot. Yeah it will be a little heavier, but an extra 2 lbs of weight will help counter some recoil. Plus help balance out the rifle.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

+1 on the brake. They make a world of difference when it comes to the recoil. I recently had a break installed on a 270 which made the recoil close to that of a 243. Was considerably louder but was worth it.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Roggom,
It is a sporter contour. Another issue I have is that I am planning on getting a heavy barrel so I'm not sure if I should still get a brake on it. Also, I have to get a new stock anyways once I get the new barrel. Thanks for the help, I think I'll probably just use a limbsaver and fill in the stock for a temporary solution.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Any suggestions for a descent, non-bank-breaking stock for when I finally do get my heavy barrel?

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

I'd only replace a stock if it failed to adequately support the action and/or didn't fit me properly.

I have a lot of Limbsavers on a lot of my rifles; mainly to increase LOP, but they also do an outstanding job of taming recoil, too.

I don't use brakes.

I don't need the noise. I don't mind folks next to me using them. I figure it's my responsibility to wear effective hearing protection; but I'd rather not be 'that' guy myself.

If the Limbsaver won't tame it, I need to trade in the rifle for a less insane chambering. I draw my recoil limits line at the .30'-'06 with 150gr bullets.

Bell & Carlson makes somewhat inexpensive stocks ($400 +/-) and they're A LOT better than anything Blackhawk makes. Get a decent muzzle break and you'll be happy.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Greg,
Point taken, thanks. The main reason I'm not going to swap out for something less powerful is because I still want to be able to use it for large game hunting in the future. It seems like the limbsaver is the best bet from what I've been hearing.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

I don't know about that specific one but the Hogue stock that came on my Rem 700 series was very flimsy up front. When a bipod was attached or even sand bagged, the stock would touch the barrel and throw off the accuracy. You can probably find one used or just taken of in brand new condition for $80 or less. Have it bedded to stiffen everything up and it'll be perfect for your price range and what you're looking for. Btw, I have the AAC edition so take a look at those socks and see if you like it.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Hoop, honestly, unless you have a family member that is a smith and is doing the work at family prices. You will be better off selling that 300 and getting something that is more comfortable for you to shoot. If you need the firepower for hunting, then put a limbsaver on it and use it on the hunt, you will only do a few sight ins and the few shots in hunting. Dragging a heavy barreled 12-15 lb rifle through the woods will get old real fast.

If you want a target/steel shooter, then pick up another rifle in a caliber you can handle comfortably. A 243 or 260 and 6.5 variants has some reach, as does the 308. A 308 will be about the least expensive to shoot, you can still find the LTR Varmints around, they are the fluted 1:10 ltr barreled actions in a tupperware stock, then find another stock here on the hide. For the price of rebarreling and restocking your current rifle, you will be about $300 away from a 700P

Just some suggestions.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Roggom,
Thanks for the advice, will consider it. Having been in the military, I don't mind carrying that much weight(or more) through the woods.

Re: Need opinions on this stock...

Two things. If the rifle kicks bigtime and the scope's eye relief is small, the Limbsaver will compress further, and increase the likelihood of a scope cut.

Number two, if a .30-'06 isn't enough gun, I'm leaving it be.
