Shooting rests, versus bags. Need a better setup.

I have limped by for years with a half empty bag of shot and a couple old ankle weights for jogging from when ran track (long ago)..

I realizse I am spending $1000s in guns and optics and have not upgraded some basic stuff.

I am shooting off a table at the range. They supply one of those "dumbell" shaped things to allow different foreend heights. I pad it with a bag...

Anyhow -- I want to upgrade so that I can better take motion out of my load developement puzzle.

I am all ears -- willing to spend a pretty penny if need be, but if the solution is a $30 set of sand bags, I'd like that too... I see some guys arriving with fancy shooting rests. Must I lug that around too??

Re: Shooting rests, versus bags. Need a better setup.

Get better sand bags... There are not many shooting rigs that can be as steady as the good old sand bag... They are heavy as shit to lug around but I do it everytime I go shooting...

It is the cheapest and best rest to use...

Good Luck...

I save my old denim jeans and cut the legs off. Cut the tubes into whatever lengths you like. Sew up one end. Get a 50lb bag of play sand from Homees or where ever else you like, $2-3. Fill up you bags and sew the ends shut. Been my method.

Take a look at the "complete rifle" rests in Cabela's catalog/website. Great selection.

If you want to compete in benchrest shooting (doubtful) then get the standard cast iron-style front rest and leather bag rear rest.

BUT if you just want the most stable platform for testing loads then get a full front-to-rear rifle rest. Your shoulder will also thank you if you get one with a butstock recoil stop.

I used a bullsbag with my bolt gun on the bench. It can be used with magazine feeders but you will have to raise the bag up with a cinderblock or similair. It reduced the felt recoil quite nicely and held my rem700 snug. Works great sittin on a hood or over the bedside of a pickup aswell.

I REALLY like my Cowan Rest. Handmade for a good cause and built like a tank.

An improvement to the pants leg would be to make your own "saddle bag" Sew the legs together and end up with something similar to this:

I made a front rest long ago, no loner have it, lost in a move. Used a wheel rotor and made the threaded upright, attached it to a base and used a protector bag. My brother drilled the rotor, threaded it so I could adjust for level.

Just some ideas.

I just use either a pillow bag or sock with beads now. The triangle wedge from Triad is a very versatile piece of equipment.

You can email Joe at [email protected] or [email protected]

His rest runs about $200 to $250 with shipping and is 100% made in the USA buy guys learning to be machinists.

Joe Cowan is a shop teacher at the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center in Altoona, PA. He's a benchrest shooter and has his students make them as projects in the class - under his supervision of course. From what I understand almost the entire rest is machined by the kids in his class. and every year THEY decide where the money goes. Usually to a known charity but one year it was to a local kid with cancer and big bills and one other time I believe it went to a family that had a bad car accident. I think they only make 70 or 80 of these a year and only sell through word of mouth. There is ALWAYS a waiting list and they are pre-sold months in advance. I waited several months for mine. They pop up in classifieds on a few gun forums from time to time but the go FAST.

DEFINEATLY worth the money AND the wait.

Here's an example of the good that comes from the proceeds of these rests..... Posted by Joe on another forum http://benchrest.com/showthread.php?6063...1b8994d120cbe81

Cowan Rest....Tragedy Hits Home

It is with great sadness that I post this message.

Last night, a senior student here at our school and enrolled in the Electronics program was shot and killed.
Scott Garlick was working at a local subway when a gunman entered through the back door in an apparant attempted robbery. He shot and killed Scott, injured another worker, and shot and killed killed an elderly gentleman as he was fleeing the neighborhood. The elderly man was simply at the curbside getting his mail. Scott was the nephew of one of our Food Service instructors.

Grief counselors are available today for our population of 1,100 students and staff to help deal with this senseless tragedy.

Scott was by all accounts an outstanding young man who
was active in SkillsUSA as afternoon vice-president and a recent SkillsUSA competitor at the state level.
Scott was also the Senior of the Year award winner in the Electronics program for the school year 2008-2009.

Why am I telling you?
The students of the Precision Machining program have already stepped up and offered any amount of money needed, with a minimum of $1,000.00 to help the family with final expenses for Scott. If there is no monitary need for the family, we will be organizing at the very least a scholorship in Scotts' name here at the school for higher education.

This type of help from my students would not be possible without you and your continued support of the benchrest project here at the G.A.C.T.C. and the Precision Machining program. You are teaching young people something that is all but gone in todays' youth, and most precious,.......selflessness.

Thank You
Joe Cowan

Re: Shooting rests, versus bags. Need a better setup.

i have bags i've made from denim, old BDU legs, socks....filled with air soft, sand, shot, river rocks and sand....

caldwell dead shot front bag

harris bipods

sinclair f-class

caldwell "the rock" rest

and i just, this morning, put myself on the November Cowan waiting list...$230 + shipping for the rest with spokes on the mariner wheel

with all of my stuff, that i have on hand right now, i shoot the worst from bags...by a LARGE margin. After that is the caldwell dead shot bag. I didn't shoot much better from the rock rest...but I think that's more about the shape of the stock..

My best groups came from the harris 6-9 brms....but i've since changed to the sinclair F-class bipod, and have only shot steel and load development, so not sure if it'll group better or not...i do like the way it rides the bags MUCH better

You will NOT be disappointed. You can use some NeverDull or Brasso to polish the brass legs to a brilliant luster. Some guys do this and spray them with a clear coat, but I just polish mine back up when they need it. Give me an excuse to take perform a little cleaning and lubing on the rest of the components that I may forget or let go too long otherwise.

Re: Shooting rests, versus bags. Need a better setup.

I'm excited...but I just hope that I'm in in time to get one. I inquired a few months back, hoping to get on the April list...but wasn't gonna happen...so I bought the sinclair and was gonna just roll with that, but I figure I'm just gonna build a brx or ppc this year...so, might as well get a decent first rest before sinking the cash on a seb
