I'm running a Vortex Viper PST FFP 6-24x50 and looking to upgrade to a Nightforce Benchrest 12-42x56. It's listed at 40MOA of adjustment and it will be sitting on a badger 20MOA rail. Enough adjustment for 1K shooting .308win 168s (2,680) and 208s (2450)? Thanks.

Just remember that you most likely wont get all 40 moa out of the scope, once it is zeroed you might only have 20 or so.

Yup...that's why I'm going with the 20MOA base to ensure I'm in the 40ish range. My Strelok app is showing 38.37 MOA needed for 1K...very close.

at 1000 you should be fine. i would not bet on a 100 yard zero using that scope and a 20 moa base

I beg to differ with previous posts indicating you will be fine out to 1000 yd with the NF BR's 40 MOA total elevation. I ran your projectiles and estimated velocities through JBM and come up with elevation settings at 1000 yd in the neighborhood of 37 MOA (208s) and 38 MOA (168s) from a 100 yd zero.

With a 20 MOA base and a max of 20 MOA up in the scope (1/2 total elevation travel), that would only give you 40 MOA total and you'd be very close to maxing out your elevation travel. This could also have the added negative effect that the optics of the scope may not be optimal with the elevation adjustment that close to the extreme limit. Chances are pretty good that you would realistically have more like 37-39 MOA total upward elevation travel after zeroing at 100 yd. You'd be at the extreme limit for that scope using the loads you mentioned, or possibly even run out of elevation travel.

Another issue worth mention is that if you were indicating Sierra 168s, they're not going to get you much past 700-800 yds due to their instability issues. Hopefully, you meant the A-MAX 168s, which fly much better. In any event, for shooting to 1000 yd with the fairly slow muzzle velocities you mentioned, I would suggest either the NXS 8-32x56 or even 12-42x56, both of which have more elevation (65 MOA and 45 MOA, respectively) available than does the BR model.

I was helping a fellow get zeroed at my club a couple weeks ago:

    Savage 10FP
    Farrell 20moa base
    NF 12-42 BR
    FGMM 168

After getting zeroed at 100 yards, he had 32moa elevation available.

Re: Nightforce Benchrest 12-42x56...enough MOA adj?

My concern with a scope that is nearly maxed out on elevation is the reduced windage that is available at that point.

With a .308 at 1,000 yards you will need a bunch of windage (at least in Nevada and Houston where I have lived and shot extensively).

I would go with the 30 MOA base or look at a different scope.

The nightforce 8-32X benchrest has 50 MOA of internal elevation.

Alternatively, the 12-42X NSX has 45 MOA of internal elevation. Not much more, but better if you are that close to maxing out.

Re: Nightforce Benchrest 12-42x56...enough MOA adj?

I have a 8-32 NXS that has 60 MOA in the scope and I have it on a nightforce unimount with 20 MOA built in, I need 38 MOA on my rifle to get to 1000 yards and its really close I have about 39.5 MOA up from a 100 yard zero. I dont think with the 12-42 benchrest you would have enough and if you do it would be maxed to get there.

Re: Nightforce Benchrest 12-42x56...enough MOA adj?

Maxing out almost would bring nothing but troubles, the optics would be less clear, and there would be less windage adjustment
