I have been tossing around the idea of getting a muzzle break for my rifle to make it softer shooting. It is a .308 and while I know that isn't some magnum caliber that wrecks you, I still wanna tame it down a bit. I am looking to spend as lil as possible on the break with maybe a $100-150 maximum. Suppressors aren't legal in Minnesota so I don't need a quick detach or anything like that.

The RWS brake (Hide member) works very well on the 308 and it's $45.

The bastards are great brakes but difficult to clean.
JP makes some outstanding ones but the tank brake is not for everyone (although arguably the most effective)
The Badger FTE is excellent and well.

+1 on the lit bastard I have shot one on a 6.5x47 and it worked great. Like any brake they can throw a little dirt, but very effective on recoil.

I have to second the RWS brake. Spent many, many a year in the machne shop. These things are created with CNC equipment. There is probably $2 worth of material in the brake. I'm sure the program for the CNC cost a little, but today with reverse engineering in Pro-E and what not, they can draw the end result and the software can generate the codes, so there's not a lot there.
RWS is a Hide memember. Makes a good product. Sells it for what he thinks is a fair price ( that means he's still making some money . . . keep in mind the other brakes that look just like it for $100 more), and generally ships it for $45 ( shipping included).
Just think about it. If you need to buy a name, then go buy a name PTE, SSA, Bunthereast, etc., but if you want a product that works for a good price, go RWS.

I went with a Near MFG brake. It is slightly more ($200.00) it is highly effective.

Never heard of the "Little Bastard" - will have to look into that.
I have had positive experiences with the Vais and Badger Thruster on .308 rifles.

We've got Ross and Farrells on our rifles and can't tell the difference in felt recoil or muzzle rise. Only difference we've seen is one throws stuff up when shooting prone and the other don't. The Farrells has holes all the way around and is fine for off a bench and the Ross is solid on the bottom and is better when shooting prone.
The Farrells just screws on, the Ross is supposed to need timed but we use a rubber O-ring between the brake and the barrel and tighten up against it till it's lined up. Been working fine and don't move and is easy to take off and switch to another gun.
Both brakes are inexpensive and maybe not show quality finish but they function as good as the higher priced versions.

I have used the Badger Thruster on two rifles and have been very happy with it. It runs $68 and well worth the money.

I ended up with the smith enterprises good iron for 308. Straight back from the recoil and no lift even when in the traditional shooting positions without a front rest like a bipod or sand bag.
Shooting 168 grain out of a 24" barrel.
My girlfriend is 5'1" 95 lbs soaking wet and she can shoot that rifle all day now.
Call or email them if you need specifics about which one fits your rifle. They respond to email pretty good.

I got a PWS PRC, and I don't care for it at all. Very long, and very loud from the shooter position. It does reduce recoil well, but the noise and blast are excessive. I went back to the muzzle thread cover.

Quick, Newbie question: I don't know a whole lot about "Timing" a muzzle device, but will a crush type washer work with most muzzle breaks?

Ross' brake is nice. I have one and love it. He can taper it to your barrel and even recess it to hid the shims you'll use to time it

SureFire MB762SS is in my top 3 favorite brakes.
Little Bastard is great as well.
JP Tactical brake is another effective tamer of recoil.

I had huge POI shifts with the PWS brake when carbon built up on the inside. I think it is also very sensitive to timing in regard to POI shift.
I just replaced mine with a Seekins Precision and all is well.

I think most brakes will change POI when you take them off, but I noticed a mil of elevation and windage when going from the brake to a can. I could have lived with that, but when I put the PWS back on, it did not return close enough to zero to suit me.

I professionaly timed mine with a flat file on a bench. Lay the file on the bench and rub away.

Who could do a great job threading it and what brake works best if I do ?
Local smiths refuse to touch it, say it would ruin the gun.
Should I just go with a new barrel already threaded ? KAC has a 20" they offered to add but aren't there better barrels now and a good mb to go with it ? Thie current barrel has about 2500 rds.through it and still shoots great at 200 yds. Willing to swap to kill recoil and up muzzle velocity if accuracy at least as good.

The RWS brake is a great break. It is a total custom brake too, you tell him the Overall dimension of the barrel, caliber, and whatever threading you want. Not to mention that they work great too. I don't think you can go wrong with one of these.
