The method to see mirage with a spotting scope is to focus on your target and then make a 1/4 turn back. Could I do this with my rifle scope or is there a reason I should not? Just something I thought of.

Thanks,

John

Re: reading mirage with rifle scope?

I was hoping so. I just was not sure if doing this method would mess with parallax to much or not. Thanks LL.

Re: reading mirage with rifle scope?

It will mess with the parallax at the target, you have to put it back when you are shooting.

In some cases you can see the mirage without having to adjust the focus.

Re: reading mirage with rifle scope?

When you refocus the scope, you are reading mirage at that new distance. Changing the focus further will often reveal a completely different mirage image. This is how one may be able to use the mirage as a sequence of wind flags.

I try to use the spotter and not to use my riflescope, as that can leave me somewhat off at the target, parallax-wise. A sorta case of "don't mess with success".

Whatever you do, don't use up lots of time at it, because conditions are constantly changing, and your final judgement may arrive too late after a major wind switch. All these refocus/reset parallax steps take time, and the wind is not waiting for you to keep up.

Re: reading mirage with rifle scope?

Funny little anecdote from this past weekend. We were doing a class in CO here, the range has shots out beyond 1 mile, so I jumped in behind a student' s 260 and took a few cracks at the target at 1766 yards. (18X30")

Any way, after a couple of shots I hit the target, then almost the very next shot went 6 mils to the left ... from being on target and within inches to 6 mils I was like what the hell. Well shot again, along with another student and both of us, 6 mils + to the left of the target.

3 minutes later a huge wind hit our position. There was storm clouds of an afternoon shower coming in, and the front was far enough away we had not target indicators of the severity the wind had increased, other than the bullet being pushed 6 mils off target. It was pretty fun to watch as we were overtaken by the storm.

The 260 was subsonic around 1650 yards so I was pushing it well below 1120fps at 1766, that wind just up and threw it.

Wow that's insane. That would be fun to watch though. And as a side note I think those new SH targets are pretty cool can't wait to try one out.
