Bolt binding on Stiller Action

I just put together a rifle using a new Stiller TAC 30. The fit and finish on the action is first class but I have a problem that I cannot seem to solve. The bolt binds when opening or closing. It is worse when closing. It is a friction issue and not an interference. If pressure is applied directly to the rear of the bolt shroud or the angle of force applied to the bolt handle is just right then it will close reasonably easy. If side load is applied by not applying force on the handle at the correct angle then either it will not close at all, close with much force or chatter as it closes. I am refering to the travel of the bolt and not to the rotation of the bolt. I have tried oil and grease on the bolt but that does not help.I called Russ at Stiller and explained the problem. He said that the clearances are very close and this is normal, I just need to learn how to manipulate the bolt. My shooting partner cannot manipulate the action easily either. I checked the clearance between the bolt body and receiver and got .006". That is the same clearance as my Bighorn and Cooper actions. My Savage 12 and Winchester 70 measure .007". I can manipulate my Savages, Wincesters, Remingtons,Bighorn and Cooper actions just fine. I hate to disparage what looks to be a fine action but I would not use this action on a gun for tactical matches, it is just too slow. Does anyone care to comment on their Stiller as it relates to this issue?

Bump, waiting to hear as I have one being built (or waiting to be built). Hope I didn't make a wrong choice...

Were you having this binding prior to assembly, or only after assembly?

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

There are those on here that are professional gun builders and can probably give you a real answer. I have a stiller as well as several other actions and I can tell you the clearances are close. Your problem sure sounds more like a lug problem to me, but what do I know. Who built the gun?

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

If you take the action out of the stock does it still do the same??

There is nothing wrong with a Stiller action, don't let that worry you, unfortunately anyone can have a bad one sneak by but the smith should have caught that.
My question is the same as yours, what is it like out of the stock

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

Hi,

I have 3 Stiller actions, 2x Tac 30s and Tac 300! They were all fairly tight and did seem bind a little at the start, especially the Tac 30s. With all new actions, i use and regularly apply bolt lube at the start ie first 100-200 rounds (even to my BATs on my BR rifles)

After using the action for a while you'll find it'll free up and run smooth as butter, mine all have. Just cycle the bolt and free it up, the Stiller actions are a great action and good value

Good luck and i hope your action frees up for you

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

Probably not a clearance issue with the bolt body or anything to do with the action, .006" is plenty. If it won't close at all when empty, it could be the front of the lugs or the bolt nose rubbing on the barrel. Check the front of the lugs/bolt nose for scuffs, did Stiller barrel it for you?

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

This is a pretty common complaint with tight custom actions. Kind of a bummer.

It can be helped quite a bit by ion bonding the action.

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

Mine have seemed a little tight until l work the bolt about 100 rounds. Now it is super slick.

Cerakote can also cause a tight bolt if put on thick.

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

I responded to wnroscoe's PM and on his suggestion I looked at the lugs. The lugs did not have very sharp corners on the leading edges but the anti bind grove on the right lug had very sharp leading edges.I stoned a small radius on those edges and also the front edge of the lugs. There is a very hard finish on the action. There was a noticable improvement in the cycling of the action. It is still not as smooth as my other actions but I will reserve judgement on that until I have a few hundred cycles on the action. For those who asked, the action was like this before it was barreled or stocked. I put the gun together myself. I am using it as a varmit gun now but I may use the action in a tactical build later. My thanks to wnroscoe who took the time to talk to me.

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

I have a stiller predator and it still binds a little at 1000 rounds on the action, put hoppes oil all over the bolt, wipe it very lightly to the point it is not dripping, apply tetra grease to the back of the lugs, and cycle the shit out of it. Reapply as needed.

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

My 2 stiller actions, tac30 and viper are absolutely slick. I've used about a dozen stiller actions and all have been very Smith from the start, just get slicker with use.

Re: Bolt binding on Stiller Action

My sps tac REM 700 was like this..adding the badger knob only magnified the issue. I simply applied jb bore paste to contact points of the bolt and worked it open and closed several times. Essentially lapping it in. Huge improvement.
