I've found that judging the temperature by the color of the oxidation doesn't always work. Depending on how the brass was cleaned, how long ago it was cleaned, the type of brass, etc., the colors will show up differently.
Never used Tempilaq or any other products like that. I'm sure it'll get the job done, but my way does as well, and less stuff to buy/apply/clean. </div></div>
I pretty much do the same although I did go to my nearby Welding Supply store and pick up a Tempilstik (750 degree). I use it to get a feel for how much "flame time" it takes to reach the desired temp at the shoulder/case wall junction. This gives me a lot cleaner looking brass in the end than trying to judge the right "glow". The time will vary quite a bit from brass brand to brand.
A heat crayon isn't all that expensive and just about every welding supply shop has them. One crayon will last a long time as it's really only necessary to measure the first case temp or two.
In the end, it's really about whatever works for you.
