    Found these today while shooting out in the desert with Chubbles and Burglecutt. As best as we can tell, they were fired in a .45ACP. There were showers of good brass so whoever did it was shooting several different guns, I'm thinking it was an accident;

    Something like that, the cases were clearly blown out to something bigger. And as you can see, the firing pin hit the edge of the primer.

    I've seen 9mm through a .40 by accident, never seen .40 through .45 though, damn that doesn't look like happy making.

    So that’s the new wildcat that all the rage, the 45-40S&W, looks like they still need to work out a few bugs with the fire forming process.

    Hard to say if it was stupid or foolish, most likely just careless (nice way of saying stupid) an officer had something similar happen with 9MM in a 40 at a requalification a few years back, they fired two rounds and then the gun jammed. The instructor came out and inspected the weapon and then pulled the officer off of the firing line. None of us knew what happened until we had finished and all of us were amazed that the weapon actually functioned for the first 2 shots.

    Re: Stupid, or Foolish???

    I was out shooting a couple years ago with a group; I shot first while the newer shooter learned to fill magazines. After I ran through the first mag, I picked up the next and the weight felt off....looked closer and saw that I had a 1911 mag full of 9mm. That could have turned my day sour, but it was a good learning opportunity for the new shooters of what not to do.

    For the OP, stupid or foolish depends on education. If they didn't know, then I'd call it stupid. If they knew better but went along anyway, I'd call it foolish. Either way, it's unwise.

    While we're on the topic, has anyone ever seen a straightwall case with a 308 headstamp? Care to guess how that one happened?

    The 44 Auto mag had brass that was hard to come by. The .308, or cases based on it, when cut down, were used by hand loaders to make brass for the .44 automag.

    My thought instantly - offset primer strike pretty much confirms it.

    Might be something along the lines of shooting 308 out of a 30-06 but not real sure. This one could go either way without having much information.

    I have fired a 16 gauge shell out of a 12 before, took a minute to realize wtf just happened.

    Queequeg and poke, it was a 308 being fired from a 30-06, and the guy couldn't figure why the rifle wouldn't group. The driver was misinformed.

    To the automag point, there's yet another round that can be made using the 308 as a parent.

    Hell, given the amazing shit Wildcatters come up with I doubt there is just one more case the .308 can be used for!

    Honestly, loading a .308 into a 30-06... Another reason my highest goal in life is to become successful enough to buy a piece of land so I can shoot there without being around morons and loons.

    Re: Stupid, or Foolish???

    i have to be careful with my browning hi powers because the 40 and 9mm mags are identical except for mouth size. i accidently grabbed a 9mm magazine and shot a round through the 40cal once. it short stroked and sounded odd.
