Rebarrel TRG

Would love to convert an existing TRG22 308 into a 260 rem. Has anyone rebarreled a TRG? Is there anything unique to the Sako action which would make this difficult?

Re: Rebarrel TRG

The TRG is a metric thread but that's not an issue for many gunsmiths. The barrels are on there super tight, some have adhesive even, and some are rusted on. As above, you can't get too much thicker on the barrel or you can't use the Sako accessories like bipod and NV rail.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

Robert @ RW Snyder has the tools and know how to rebarrel TRG's... I am getting close to send my TRG-22 to him to have the barrel chopped down and threaded to a more standard thread.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

That raises another question, I've seen where some have had their muzzles rethreaded with a more standard thread pattern for compatibility with suppressors. Just wondering how this works, does material have to be re-added to cut the new threads?

Re: Rebarrel TRG

Benchmark barrels have done a few, and the results were great as expected.

My trg 22 is a switch barrel fro mthe factory 20" .308 to a 26" .260 easy for a smith. Keep at Rem Varmint or Med Palma contour and no issues with barrel clearance on any factory hardware.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

If I remember right the TRG has a smaller barrel breach diameter so the barrel will need to be ordered that way or turned down. To recut the factory muzzle threads the barrel will probably need to be chopped back and rethreaded.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

Your smith can just turn down and recut the threads to 5/8-24.

Re-adding is never an option in anything firearms. Measure twice cut once.

The barrels on my TRG's have all had the metric threads turned down and have been threaded 5/8-24 so they work with any one of my suppressors or aftermarket brakes.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

As of a few months ago GAP told me they were not taking on new TRG work and referred me to Mark @ Short Action Customs

You're picking nit's for the difference between TRG, REM Varmint or Med Palma contour.

Choose an aftermarket blank in Rem Varmint or Med Palma and rock on.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

I don't know what the factory but I am going to be running a 1.150 at breach down to a .93 at muzzle (straight contour, .260 Rem).

Re: Rebarrel TRG

when ever i get the money to build the 300 i want im thinking rem varmint. not to heavy, not to light, just right. would give any to have a trg but .. dont have enouhg of that green stuff thay call money. sucks having to build piece by piece.

I just got mine thru Euro optic they sell them for $3,098 the TRG42 is a little more..they also have a few rifles with other options that obviously effect the retail.

but between their customer service so far and all the positive reviews and feedback on the rifle I think its well worth it.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

If you keep your eyes open they come up used frequently too. Seems like the 308 and especially the 300wm are holding value a little better. I found tons of 338 up for sale (new and used) and they were about the same if not a little less than what the 308s were going for. I think the cost of shooting a 338 is decreasing demand for them, I could be wrong.

Sako sold 200 TRG-22 in the US chambered in 260rem, they don't come up very often. There's one on GB right now and the guy wants like $6K for it. No way I'm paying those kinds of prices, I'd just get my TRG rechambered in 260 if I have to have that caliber.

Biggest benefit to me for a TRG is its a built rifle with .5MOA capability out of the box and it can be in your hands within a week of buying. All the custom rifles that are discussed on here are incredible, but I'm way too impatient to shell out thousands only to have to wait 6 months to get it. Forget that, there's no way.

Re: Rebarrel TRG

I apologize if I am hijacking this thread, but I am sort of in the same boat with a similar question.

I own a TRG22 right now and I am considering a switch over to a 6.5mm barrel to shoot 6.5x47 lapua. Is there a way to get a barrel manufacturer to just cut the barrel threading that will screw into the TRG receiver so I can switch out the barrel myself using an action wrench, or would it be better to just purchase a blank and have a gunsmith chamber it? The reason why I ask is because it doesn't take a rocket scientist to rechamber a barrel, and I feel like it would be much cheaper just to rebarrel it myself.
