At least seven people were killed, including the suspected gunman, in a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., south of Milwaukee on Sunday.

According to police, 911 dispatchers received multiple calls from the temple at approximately 10:25 a.m. local time. An officer who responded to the scene was treating a victim when he was "ambushed" by the suspected gunman in the parking lot, Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said. The veteran officer was shot multiple times and rushed to Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, Edwards said.

The suspect was shot and killed by a second officer, police said. The gunman was not identified, and no motive was released.

Tactical units conducting a sweep of the 17,000-square-foot temple discovered four bodies inside and three—including the gunman—in the parking lot. Edwards said "weapons" were recovered, but would not elaborate. According to CNN, two guns were recovered.

There were initial, unconfirmed reports of multiple shooters and a hostage situation, though police said they believe there was just one gunman.

A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said a total of three victims, including the officer, were admitted—two with gunshot wounds to the face and one with gunshot wounds to the abdomen. All three are in critical condition, the spokesman said. Other area hospitals were initially told to prepare for as many as 20 victims, though it appears that figure was precautionary.

Law enforcement officials are treating the case as an "act of domestic terrorism," police said, and the FBI is leading the investigation. The names of the victims in Sunday's shooting were not released.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Satwant Kaleka, the president of the temple, was one of the victims taken to Froedtert Hospital, according to his nephew, Gurmit Kaleka.

Dozens of worshipers, including women and children, were gathering for a meal before an 11:30 a.m. prayer service at the temple, or gurdwara, when the shooting occurred. There are about 500 members in the congregation, officials said.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as worshipers reportedly hid inside closets within the building after the gunman opened fire inside.

President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting shortly before 1 p.m. (ET) by chief counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, a senior administration official told Yahoo News.

"Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin," Obama said. "At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded. My administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation. As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

Mitt Romney released a statement, too. "This was a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall any house of worship," Romney said. "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Oak Creek Sikh community. We join Americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead."

Wis. Gov. Scott Walker said his office is working with the FBI and local law enforcement in its investigation.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence," Walker said. "At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends."

The Indian Embassy in Washington called it a "tragic incident" and said it has been in touch with the National Security Council and local authorities to monitor the situation.

Sunday's shooting comes less than a month after the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre, when 12 people were killed and 58 wounded during a midnight screening of "Dark Knight Rises."

Sikhism is a 500-year-old monotheist faith with about 27 million followers worldwide, including about 300,000 in the United States.

Since 9/11, Sikh groups in the United States have reported a rise in bias attacks. There have been more than 700 reports of hate-related incidents against Sikhs since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to the Associated Press. "Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims," the AP noted, "but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say."

In the wake of the shooting in Wisconsin, law enforcement officials in other cities, including New York City, increased patrols near Sikh temples on Sunday. However, there is no known threat against Sikh temples in New York, the NYPD said.

The Police Department must like guns. They didn't say anything about the guns involved for the media to run away with, and didn't mention the shooter by name, so it's hard to speculate much of anything.

It appears to have been handled more professionally with that regard. Kudos for killing the guy instead of apprehending him too. That's good police work.

No motivation for anyone else to be the next psycho killer.

Re: Shooting at Sikh temple: 7 dead, including suspect

I like what the police c hief said

"At that point an officer aimed and fired his duty rifle at the suspect and the suspect dropped immediately."

I like that, surgical precision.

Crying shame the idiot that did this thought they were muslims, Hindu and that specific religion are about as peaceful as anything gets on this earth.

Re: Shooting at Sikh temple: 7 dead, including suspect

It was a silly act by an idiot. In his fucked up mind, he thought he was doing something great.....What a shame. I am also a Sikh and in Law Enforcement. I have numerous family members in the US Armed Forces and in law enforcement as well. Its a black eye to man kind, and the gun industry as it causes knee jerk reactions for stricter gun control which fucks things up for all of us...my heart goes out to the fellow Sikhs involved and the LE officers that responded to the incident, as well as the Oak Creek community.

Re: Shooting at Sikh temple: 7 dead, including suspect

Once again, the deranged perp chose a place where people are likely to be unarmed.

Your post irritates me immensely. ]

Yes the shooter was an idiot IF he thought he was attacking Muslims, but it's NOT a shame that the Sikhs got attacked in lieu of Muslims. A shooting of peaceful praying Muslims would be JUST AS BAD.

And Hindus and Sikhs have their violent members and histories too, if you were at all familiar with either culture you would know that.

People need to separate religion and violent individuals with religion-linked beliefs. Hindu-Muslim violence in India isn't indicative of their religious tenents, Catholic/Protestant terrorists aren't indicative of the Christian church, and Iraq/Afg combatants aren't indicative of Islamic ideals.

So FUCK YOU from an extremist-Muslim-hating Hindu-girlfriend-dating atheist.

Sat sri akaal, Veer and Rem. My heart goes out to the Sikh community and the members of that Gurdwara and their families. Really sad!

These senseless murders may lead to a better understanding of the Sikh people and their courageous nature as well as their big hearts.

Re: Shooting at Sikh temple: 7 dead, including suspect

For ten years I worked part time at an office supply store in Edison, NJ selling the regular office stuff but I was mainly the computer, lap top, software go to person. The Edison area is what I would call Little India.

Working in Edison during this time I came across someone of the Sikhs religion. After ten years I have to say there was NEVER a time that anyone of that persuasion was rude, short temper, gruff, or not totally respectful. That takes in all ages from young adults to mature males.

You can say, Maxwell, that is a generalization and I would have to agree with you. However in general every one was a pleasure to help & assist.

What an horses rear end to go into a house of worship & murder innocent people.

I actually feel really bad for the Sikhs. After 9/11, the only retributive killing was a Sikh killed by some redneck in Houston who thought he was a Muslim.

Now a guy shoots up a temple of Sikhs thinking they are Muslims?

It is a shame in any case... but it goes to show how ignorant these hatemongers are.

At least the jihadists seem to grasp that they are killing indiscriminately. These idiots don't even know whom they are killing... Again, not saying that it would be any better to shoot up a Mosque or anything... but what huge freaking idiots.

Actually, it was in Mesa, AZ. As loathe as I am to send anyone to HuffPo, they've put up a reasonable timeline of some of the difficulties since 9/11:

FWIW, we deal with this on a daily basis. Three weeks ago, it was some knucklehead pulling into a Popeye's as I was getting out of my car for a three-piece with red beans and rice, cursing me and asking if I was from "fucking Iraq." Strangely enough, when I replied that I was from a rural county seat about an hour up the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers from where this exchange was taking place, it turned into a proud racist tirade centered around Mr. Excitable's ethnicity and that of the man in DC who currently has his finger on The Button.

Today, though, was different. The few looks that I did get were somewhat apologetic and sorrowful.

Has this actually been confirmed or it is just mere speculation?

I know since the suspect is dead either there would have to be evidence of this prior to the shooting or it is mere speculation.

let's not give the libs any more rope than they already have.

I want to know this as well...how do we know he did this thinking they were Muslims?
