I need a calibre that can kill a DEER at 800m or more.
I’ve been looking at the 338 lapua but it’s more than $15 in Australia which is stupid, so I looked in to the 300 win mag its fair cheap but I don’t know if its if enough for what I want.
Is there any good cheap Cal’s out there?
Thanks….

Re: need a new cal.

A 300 win mag will do just fine for that purpose. You could even go a little smaller if you wanted. If you are a good shot and have praticed with your rifle, you could go as small as a 6.5mm 284, 6.5 mm creedmore and even a 308 will do it with the right bullet. No matter what you shoot, practice, pratice, pratice.

Re: need a new cal.

Depending on what size deer you talking Sambar or something smaller? at 800m you need some good knock down on an animal that size or you could be tacking a long while.

Re: need a new cal.

Can you get 300 RUM cases over there. If so that will work for what you are wanting to do. If you want to step up to 338, build an Edge. The 338 Edge will do anything a 338 Lapua will do.

Re: need a new cal.

The 338 RUM does quite well also and you don't have to mess with fire forming anything.

Re: need a new cal.

7 mag with the heavies, or a straight 284 and a 280 AI even, plenty of good heavy hunting bullets for it and ballistics are awesome.
hope this helps.

Re: need a new cal.

+1 on 7mm just about anything magnum. I've heard of a 195 for 2013.

Re: need a new cal.

7 wsm should fit the bill. Plus a lot less recoil that the RUM cased rounds. I would shoot a deer that far with my 7 wsm.

Re: need a new cal.

A good rule of thumb to generate enough wound path and trauma is to have twice the weight of the animal in retained energy for clean kills. Having said that there are several hunting projectiles on the market nowadays that make that moot. If your deer are walking under 250 pounds I would be comfortable using a higher end projectile like an Accubond, A-max or Barnes in anything 243 or bigger. Remember good projectile performance and shot placement are everything. So just like Stephen said above, practice.

Re: need a new cal.

Save yourself some trauma, and try the .280 Rem.

Anything that will anchor a human is just about right for a deer, too. I'd not be wanting to stand idle at 800yd in front of a .280 Rem. It could make that day my last one.

I'm assuming a 150gr bullet going supersonic is going to be sufficiently lethal. The .280 can drive a 150gr Nosler Partition or Ballistic Tip supersonic to at least 1000yd. Hornady 280 Rem Superformance 139gr SST factory loads are very effective.
