I usually shoot 139 Lapuas but there was a pretty good wait so I ordered some 140 amax's. Didn't see much on the search button. Anybody here use them? Are they picky like the Berger's? Any info would be appreciated.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

They're nowhere near as picky as the Berger VLD's are, they remain stable through transonic realm and subsonic transition at low DA levels (1000' is appx the lowest DA that I've shot them through the sound barrier) and the cost is very nice considering their performance.

The new Hornady OTM 140gr is a really good bullet too, I picked up 1500 of them this year and started working through, after about 400 of them so far I'm seeing consistent groups in the 1/4MOA range up close and very predictable hits out past 1000yd.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

I'm with Bohem. I find that the 140 BTHP's pretty much mimic 139 Scenar performance for about 60% the price depending on where you get them. I don't even check distance to the lands any more.

Cheaper without giving up much performance.

And IMHO as an ex-manufacturing engineer... I see the BTHP as being much simpler to manufacture with less inherent piece-to-piece variabilty. I do like the idea of the poly tip from an aerodynamics standpoint, but I wouldn't want to have to design or maintain the process that puts them in place. KISS.

If the Amax's work for you... awesome. A lot of this game is mental... so let's call this my little mental quirk.

But then I'd rather have standard vs. ABS brakes any day of the week, too.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

I use the 140 A-Max in my 260. I have shot them out to 900 yards and they group really well in my gun. I would recomend them.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Thank you all for you information. I'll be using them in a 260 as well. The price was nice too. Looking forward to trying these amax's out now.

Thanks again.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

JROB: Thanks, I suspected that was the answer, but wanted to know if I was missing something accuracy wise. Also suspect the BTHP gets you a little closer to the lands if mag length is an issue.

You do bring up another good point. In calibers like 300WM and .260 where mag length is often an issue, the BTHP design is definitely shorter from ogive to tip, and although they give up a little BC to their Amax brother, the difference between loading or not at or near the lands may be important to some.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Been using the 140 AMAX in my 6.5 Creedmoor for years and they are a great bullet. I would use the 140 BTHP if they loaded them but they don't right now.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Mag length is a concern. I'm loading my 139s out to 2.850 OAL now because I've put a little over 1,600 rds through this barrel. So will there be less room to move these bullets around? I plan on using these on a new barrel.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Love the Amax and the HPBT! I have favoring the HP more just because if price and I get tired of seen red tips all the time.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

I have shot a lot of the 120 Amax with great succes, i just bought a couple of boxes of the 140 and will be testing them friday at 950 yds. I hope they'll shoot as good as the 142SMK's

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

My current 260 bullets are the 140 A-Max (for single feed) and the 140SMK (for mag feed).

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Only one way to find out how they do and that's for me to shoot them. I was glad to see other people using them with success. Thanks again for your info.

Ever thought of loading the 123 Amax for mag feeding?

.510 BC and 150-200 fps faster. Just a thought, considering the 140 SMK BC is only around .535.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Would you need a slower twist barrel to shoot the 123's?

They shoot great in an 8 twist.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Thanks Rob, that may be an option if I run out of room for mag feeding. That was a good suggestion.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Aye. This fall I'm going to try 140 Amaxs and Bergers in my DPMS LR260, and if I can't get them to shoot straight at magazine length, the 123 Amax is my next choice. I'm not going to single-load my semi auto.

The 123 Amax also shoots the best of any 120-123gr bullet that I've tried in my 6.5 Grendel.

No issues at all. You can't push them fast enough in a 260 to cause issues.

Creedmoor and .260 shoot at similar velocities.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

260s with 26" barrels can run 123s north of 3100fps...or at least my 1:8 barrel does.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

I have used the 120 Nosler Ballic Tip, 120SMK, and 129SST. The 120BT is awesome as a Varmint round, the 120SMK was a pretty good target round for out o 600-800yd, and the 129SST never really 'came in' for me, accuracy-wise. I probably just needed to try a little longer. Never got around to the 123's.

My .260 is currently back-burnered while I finish up load developing for my Savage .30BR FV250 Custom.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

I love the 140 bthp. I shot my best group with them, .5 inch at 300 yds. They usualy shoot 3/4 inch groups at 300. I haven't taken them out further yet. I bought 500 140 amax to try. I will find out Sunday how they shoot with my pet load of 43.5gr of h4350. On the lands. I will also try different seating depths in the future.

Re: 6.5 Amax Experiences

Just got 1,000 Amax's in today so I'm jumping in with both feet. Now if I could get a barrel from AI I would be set.
