To begin with, I am relatively new to LR shooting/reloading. I have a 700 sps .308 in a B&C m40 stock. My question is a 2.5 inch 5shot group acceptable accuracy out of this platform? I am shooting 168 nosler match under 44g of varget, federal gmm primer and hornady match brass, my oal is 2.810. Also i cannot for the life of me get my rifle to load from the mag!

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

Depends on the distance, 2.5 inches is phenomenal at anything over 400 yards, but at 100 yards it should be performing much better than that. How far away is your target?

Not loading from the magazine? Is the bolt sliding right over the rounds?

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

that is at 300 yards, most of the time it will shoot .75 moa at 100 (with my reloads). but yes the bolt will just slide over the rounds

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

Is the bolt slipping over the round? Make sure the follower is completely flush to the bottom of the receiver. Also make sure you have the internal mag seated correctly. It is possible to pinch it and still fit the receiver screws in. If the bolt is slipping over the rear of the spring is bent downward, if the round is jamming then the the front of the spring is bent. Oh btw, my sps-v and sps-t have a 4 round internal not a 5. It's 4+1, 4 in the mag one in the chamber.

As for your load. You should be able to achieve at least 1moa on the sps. Read up on OCW loading and try to find an acceptable node.

For the sps-v and sps-t 1:12 I found a node at 44.8 of varget under a 168 smk, Noscc, or HNDY match. Also I seat to 2.828: which is still under mag length.

Just work up you loads a little more and you will find the sweet spot. Even if you decide to use the 40 gr, try seating at 2.800, 2.820, 2.830. Especially if you have a cluster of 3 and 2 flyers.

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

Thanks! I will try that. I know my lands start at 2.950 so i have to find somewhere that is somewhat close but still mag length.

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

The NOScc has a tangent ogive, no need to jam them in the lands. I think the max mag length is something close to 2.840, I just load nothing longer then 2.830.

If you load up some Berger VLD's then you may have to get closer to the lands, but then you are stuck single feeding. For me anything longer than mag length is useless.

Sure.
At 300 yards.

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

a guy next to me at the range was shooting an SPS to 600 and holding pretty good groups with hand loads. I've seen him there before so if i see him again ill ask him what load he's using.

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

"Read up on OCW loading and try to find an acceptable node."

Good advice. My 5R likes 42.9 grn of Varget under 168 Noslers.

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

It's acceptable but one would hope it would do better. How's your trigger ? Is the barrel floated?

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

Accuracy is good for a SPS (Sewer Pipe Special).

I've got a couple of them myself and they can shoot well below moa with loads they like.

My last on had the same issue with feeding. The bolt was riding over the rim of the round. I solved it disassembling and spreading the top of the mag box with my fingers, and then reassembling. After that it works 100%. For some reason with the magbox lips too narrow, the rounds were not riding up and against the feed rails.

accuracy is superb out of mine with the right handload. This was 5 shots @ 100 yards with my SPS-V with: 168gr AMAX over 40.5gr Varget (not 43 like the pic shows), New Winchester Brass FL sized/trimmed to spec, Federal 210m Primer and seated @ 2.176" from the Ogive (or 2.800 OAL). This was my first handload and i was really pleased with the results.

The only thing that sucks about the SPS is the super long throat if you're using the internal magazine.

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

thanks for the replies! I think that I am going to make the switch to the 178 Amax ( I am starting to get into 1000 yards) and do a ladder test with that. I am also planning on getting a better press ( I believe I am having run out issue's from my lee challenger press, i am really liking the foster co-ax. My other issue is that I was taking apart my rifle to fix the mag and i noticed what looked like rub marks on the aluminum block behind the recoil lug area! so it looks like I need to skim bed the sucker

Re: rem 700 sps accuracy

On a good day, ie; little wind, my SPSS will shoot like this, hope thats acceptable, this isnt an every day occurrence by any stretch, most days will be in the 1/2MOA.
