I'm wondering what all parts needs or should be done on a Surgeon 591 action and bolt with Robars NP3?
Should the firing pin, ejector, extractor, springs, etc. all need the finish applied?
I really need you guys help on this one.
Any info would be Greatly Appreciated.

Re: NP3 on a bolt action??

If you are going to take the time to send it to Robar you might as well have them do the whole thing except maybe the springs.

Re: NP3 on a bolt action??

I had 4 bolts done , first I had all the parts coated except the springs and it ended up causing some interfearance issued , the last 3 only the naked bolt and firing pin were coated.
the extractor and ejector are "expendable" parts in my oppinion so I'm not willing to waste the aggravation of trying to hone that shit to fit.

one note though that I noticed on all 4 bolts was they seem a little "sticky" the first couple hundred times the bolt is cycled

Re: NP3 on a bolt action??

Research Nickel Boron.

I think it's superior to NP3, and it is *almost* non-dimensional.

A friend of mine does the post-coating polish. I was visiting his shop a couple weeks ago and he gave me some parts to play with. It is slick as a button, and almost can't be worn off. I literally put a part in a lathe and tried to sand it off. I couldn't. After several minutes @ 500rpm with 120grit 3M sandpaper, I had decreased the diameter by .0001".

Good stuff.

He treated some rear-end gears for his 1500hp dragcar, and it's been holding up great.

Nickle Boron sounds really nice but the receiver, bolt knob, shroud and cocking piece already have the NP3 and I would prefer to stay with the same finish for appearance.
