Gunsmithing Barrel fluting question

Re: Barrel fluting question

Typically, a barrel has a standard finish length for a certain barrel contour, such as 26" for an M40 or MTU contour, and from there I think it depends on the barrel manufacturer, such as Bartlein which I believe will start the flute 4" from the breach end, and end it 2" from the muzzle. I would ask the barrel manufacturer that you're interested in what they do. I just ordered a Schneider M40 contour barrel, and I specified that the fluting start 5" from the breach, and end 4" from the muzzle. The reason is it's for a 300WM and will have a Surefire brake added when the rifle is built. The Surefire brakes overlap the end of the barrel. Also, I didn't want to lighten it up too much so it balances right.
