Timney is the all around best for the R700 IMO. Great crisp trigger that is field reliable unlike some of the other options.
An old style R700 trigger cleaned up by a good smith is right there with it though. I don't mean an adjustment, I'm talking pull the trigger apart, smoothen everything up, reassemble, and adjust.

That can be achieved with a timney or old style R700 trigger worked over no problem. I believe the Timmy is adjustable down to 1 or 1.5lbs.

I like Timney triggers too. They are a little over a $100. If you get one with a preset weight from the factory, they are $140 with shipping. I believe this money is swell spent unless you chance upon a tuned remington trigger.
The only thing to watch out is that chassis systems designed for a R700 footprint often require you to relieve a small portion of the bedding block to get it to fit properly. Sometimes either the forward set screw sticks out too far or the channel is so narrow that it prevents the stop bolt from engaging. It's a simple fix, but you'll need a carbide bit and a dremel.

I recently ordered a Timney from the factory preset at 1.5lbs and it's a good upgrade from factory but I still like the Shilens better, just my personal preference. Midway has the shilens on sale until the end of august for I think 87.00 also.

but the Shilen's don't come with the safety mechanism...ends up costing as much as (or sometimes more than) the Timneys. However, I have shot a Shilen...wow! Well worth the price of admission!

Save your money. Keep and adjust the stock remington trigger. I've seen +$300.00 triggers break at the worst possible time while the stock triggers continue to hammer away. That's a heck of a lot of money to spend on a bucket full of FAIL.

Ring, have two Rifle Basix triggers installed, one in a Rem700 ft/r rifle and one in a Rem700 260 practical rifle. Both triggers work very well and installation was a breeze, my other Rem700 sports its original trigger tuned by my Smith before he retired, its also quite excellent. As Ranger suggests some Smiths can tune your trigger for a fraction of what a new one can cost.

ok, so installed the timney..set to 2lb... vary nice... had to inlet the stock a tad to make room for the front adjuster screw.. but i have 1 issue..
the bolt release is "sticky", in or out of the stock, when i depress it, it wont sprint back to re-lock the bolt.. i have to reach up with my finger nail and pull it down...
there is a small screw on the side i loosened up to help, but its still sticky.. i oiled it as well

If you are on a budget go with a tuned 700 trigger for best results.
If you have unlimited funds, go with a 700 trigger for best results.
I have shot most all the aftermarket stuff and do not like any of it as well as the Rem trigger.

I agree the wider shoe and crisp break is what makes it so much better than even a well tuned stock trigger. Mine is set for 2.5# on my R700 SPS TAC in .223

I have had the same problem as RING. I have to reach up and pull the bolt stop down or else i will pull my bolt out right into my face. Only needs to happen once after you put your bolt in. Other than that i have three timneys and love them.

I think this option is overlooked too frequently. You can get a spring that allows reduced trigger weights from Ernie the Gunsmith for $7, which is a whole lot cheaper than a new trigger (see Remington M-700 X-Mark Pro Adjustable HunterTrigger Spring for example).
