Night Vision FLIR T50 or T60?

I am debating the 50 vs 60. I was hot to get the 60, but it looks the 50 might be a better all around unit, in that in addition to being a clip on, it can be used as a free standing thermal, also has 2x and 4x zoom, which would seem to make it a better hand held unit than the 60. I'm not sure the 60 can used as a handheld anyway. Advice?

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I have both, IMHO, the T-50 is a better all around thermal clip-on unit as long as you do not need more than 4X power.

It will easily take out everything between you and 250+ yards in pitch dark.

If you need more range than that then the T-60 can be used up to 6X with a scope at a greater cost with less versatility.

Both of them work great as hand-held scanners.

An ACOG TA02 LED battery scope is a perfect match for both of these outstanding thermal instruments.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I have a FLIR M18 640x320 that I love. Resolution is awesome. That is why I was leaning to the 60, but the 50 seems to be more versatile. Thanks for the info.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

The resolution on the 640X480 on the T-60 is indeed awesome, but the 320X240 unit on the T-50 is not too shabby at all, in fact I actually prefer it because you can manually adjust the brightness on five different levels if needed. The resolution differences only really become apparent on higher magnification, ie above 4X.

Like I said, nothing, and I mean nothing, is going to get away from you using the T-50 out to 250 yards, nothing. It is that damn good.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

Thanks for the info. Most of my guns have schmidt benders. Do you think the T50 will work ok with those at the lower powers? Where in FL are you? I spend a lot of time in Pensacola.
On another note, what do you advise in terms of a clip on for NV? I have been looking hard at the CNVD-LR. I had a PVS24, which was nice but not very effective above 4x, and I sold it.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I am outside of Gainesville not far from the Suwannee River.

I used my Leopold 1-4X Pig Plex scope last night with the T-50 and it is a beautiful combination, your S-B scopes should be even better. You may need to use medium to high rings though to raise the scope up enough to match the T-50. I normally use the lowest rings possible.

I have not personally tired a clip on NV unit on my rifles, if I did want one though, the CNVD-LR would be my choice matched with a high power scope for the best in long range recognition and targeting, that 68mm objective lens is just awesome....

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

Very cool video! So do you use thermal pretty much exclusively? I find myself relying more on my FLIR M18 to find things at night over my night vision. The night vision is, of course, superior in IDing the item in the scope. Thanks.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

Yes, I am using helmet mounted NV and lasers on the walk out to our stands to take care of anything we may run into and then once on our stands scanning with thermal (FLIR PS-32) and then using FLIR thermal weapon mounted scopes for making the shots.

Thermal does not replace NV gear, but accentuates it very nicely. Still must make positve ID and recognize the shooting environment, in additon to being situationally aware.

In that video, there were three hogs about 100 yards out in front of me in a pond with tall dog fennels and I was waiting to get a shot on them when I noticed a thermal register about 350 yards out in a thick slash pine forest canopy. I held off on shooting the hogs and waited patiently for the lone coyote to wander into view in the open. When I let the coyote have it at 200 yards out, the hogs squealed and screamed and took off running into the swamp, that is why I dropped down after shooting the coyote in the video looking to pick up an escaping hog but did not see one in the thermal, so I kept an eye on the downed coyote and made sure he did not go anywhere...

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

Very nice. Great head shot. How often do you have to recalibrate the T50 once you get out into the field, after your initial calibration?

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

The T-50 holds it calibration for a long time rarely having to do a NUC, but the T-60 needs a NUC quite often, may just be that it is summer time and very hot and not much temp differentiation seeing as they can differentiate 85*F and there is less than a 10-20 degree difference between ambient temps and a hog or coyote?

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

Don't want to derail this thread, I picked up an 2nd hand MKII as my first thermal unit and would like to know how to zero it so I can use it to take my own videos.

Also, how are you ranging accurately at night?

Thanks,

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I am shooting handloaded Barnes .224 70 grain TSX bullets so I initially sight in at 50 yards bullseye and then take it out to 225 yards bullseye. That way I cover the entire distance to the max lethal range of my rifle-cartridge combination from 0-225 yards never being off by more than +/- 1.5 or so inches.

I am either using an ACOG TA02 or Eotech and can estimate range by the size of the animal in relation to the reticules.

I don't know about the MKII thermal, I saw one on Summit's site if that is what you have, maybe someone else can chime in about that model?

Here is a daylight photo of my game cam tree out 175 yards and the slash pine tree line at laser measured 225 yards for comparison to the viewing scenes in the above thermal videos:

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I get the zero protocol but am wondering what to use as a target so I can see it. Needs to be something warm right?

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I filled gallon milk jugs with hot tap water at night...they show up just fine for an hour or two.

I first sighted in my ACOGs without the thermal clip-on installed on the rail, then zeroed the ACOGs @ 50 yards and fine tuned them at 225 yards. Then installed thermals and they shot to the same POI.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

Just sight in your day weapon sight as usual, add clip-on FLIR and have at it!

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

Sweet rig SkyPup. Is that a DbalD2 or I2 on the front?

Can the T50 be used as a stand alone thermal weapon sight, without another scope? I believe it has an internal reticle, unlike the T60.

That is the DBAL-D2 on the top front end, both the FLIR Thermals work just fine with any of the DBAL type lasers on the top rail.

The T-50 has four adjustable different internal reticules if you want to use it as a stand alone scope with 1X, 2X, or 4X power. Once you set them, they come back on in the same place next time you power it up.

The T-60 has no internal reticule at all and has 0.5X for wider FOV and 1.0X only.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I have the DBAL-I2 with TNVC Pro Torch IR on one rifle and the DBAL-D2 on another rifle.

Re: FLIR T50 or T60?

I ended up putting a 2 inch black birchwood casey shoot n see dot on the cardboard at 100 yards. In the sunlight because it's black it stood out like a sore thumb and zeroing was a snap.
