208 AMAX AMP vs. non AMP

Didn't find much on the search, so here goes.....getting ready to start a load workup for 300RUM in my Rem 700. I have about 400 208 AMAX bullets, but half are AMP jackets and half are not. That is a long story in itself.

Is there any notable differences with the dimensions on these 2 bullets or are they pretty much interchangeable? Any differences in bearing surface, length, Ballistic coefficient, etc.? Just wondering if this would require 2 different loads?

Thanks in advance,
Chad

It's funny you post this....

last night I started loading some ammo, and saw the box some AMP jackets or something. I don't ever remember seeing that, so I was curious what it was... now you post this lol

what is this amp jacket anyways? better for hunting or something? more uniform jacketing?

AMP is Hornady's new name for their improved case forming process used in the A-MAX and Match bullet lines which has now migrated to almost all Hornady bullets now.

When I first got some of the new AMP A-MAX bullets I found they had slightly different dimensions than the old non-AMP versions. But the AMPs measure and scale closer to the same as each other than the non-AMP bullets did. I think they are better bullets than they were before.

Thanks for the responses gents.......I may call Hornady tomorrow and see if there is any difference in the bullets that would require different loading recipes.

Re: 208 AMAX AMP vs. non AMP

I remember hearing that the non-AMP jacketed bullets were larger than the new AMP ones, and that the AMP jacket makes the rounds more consistent.

AMP=Advanced Manufacturing Process

must make it better

Re: 208 AMAX AMP vs. non AMP

I called Hornady and spoke with a tech guy named Doug. He said that the 208 AMAX has always been an AMP jacket, so no difference in the bullets. They just didn't advertise or market it as having the AMP jacket previously. He also mentioned that this holds true for all AMAX and VMAX bullets.

interesting....

FWIW, when I was loading, my COAL was off. my die sets the legnth off of the ogive, so I was off by like .1 or .2 or something.... I was wondering why I was off so much, thought maybe this was it, but doesn't sound like it

Hornady may have told you they were always the same but that new lot of AMP bullets were significantly different dimensions than the non AMP labled bullets and they have not changed since. This was some time ago and maybe I just had some bad bullets but all of the old 178gr A-MAX bullets I measured were very similar to the old lot. The new lot of AMP labeled 178gr A-MAX were very different and my seater had to be changed for the new AMP labeled bullets or they would not fit in my magazines. The new AMP bullets also shot better than my very early 178gr A-MAXs.
