Maggie’s Brief sniper firefight

Re: Brief sniper firefight

Can anyone figure the range from the time lapse between sonic boom and rifle going off?

Re: Brief sniper firefight

2:07- is it just me or does that look like a bullet hole in the mag well of the M82/107?

In-fact there is already tech that does that and it gives a pretty accurate direction too.

Yeah, the direction requires multiple mics. I was just wondering if anyone here could come up with a rough range.

"Come right more" and "Come up a little bit"??!!

My old (now quite old) Sergeant Major would have chewed me a new one had I given those corrections.

Re: Brief sniper firefight

You're talking about the Boomerang systems. There's a better unit out there called EARS made by Qinetiq. Too many problems with the Boomerang systems. I used to work for the REF and was part of the integration team in 08-09 for SWATS. Same company only it worked for the individual soldier. Gave a good sense of direction but narrow alleyways or walls would screw up the acoustics some.

Re: Brief sniper firefight

Hear the bullet/see bullet impact - start counting by ones as fast as you can; when you hear the rifle report, the number you are on is a rough approximation of the distance in yards to the other shooting position. Practicing in the butts when pulling targets helps you refine this field expedient technique to use in the absence of more technologically sound and accurate methods.

PS; works best for me to count to 10 then start over instead of "eleventwelvethirteenfourteen" etc.

Taught to me by an actualy 11D30 with 43 confirmed in his "official" jacket.

Re: Brief sniper firefight

Screw it, we cant hit him. Lets have a little chow and call in an airstrike!

I was wondering that too.
I'm guessing the Marine sniper was preoccupied with a different bad guy... And another unnoticed bad guy zeroed in.

Re: Brief sniper firefight

That sniper was closer in I'll bet than the targets they were engaging at the beginning of the vid.

God Bless Our Troops.
Especially Our Snipers.

Re: Brief sniper firefight

Might have something to do with the Barrett being about a 3moa gun with API and 5-6moa with ball ammo. I have yet to see .50 cal match ammo in inventory.

P.S.- I would love to know what an 11D is....

Re: Brief sniper firefight

More than likely an optical illusion, but... Look at the scope at the 1:56 mark on the video. Add in the bullet hole, and it seems weird!

Re: Brief sniper firefight

Hmm, news to me. Thought that would be an ASI, not an entire MOS. I was never heavy though.

Don't know how they do things now but when I went through all the guys who signed up as 11B,11C and 11D did there basic and AIT all in the same training company / grounds as all 3 MOS share common training. At the very end of AIT we would split up into our MOS training groups. The 11B guys got time with the M60 and what ever else came with the ticket. Those of us who were 11C no longer had to do morning PT as our whole day on the mortar range was PT. The TOW guys went and did there own thing. Top scoring gunner in simulations got to fire a real TOW. I don't remember any of the TOW guys but who ever was the top shooter missed with the live TOW.

I would have liked to see that but I was running my ass off on the mortar range. </div></div>

When I went thru in '01 they had done away with the Deltas, we got a half day crash course on the TOW and the other half of the day was spent on the claymore. I forget though if that was before or after the Charlies had split off from us to do their thing.

Re: Brief sniper firefight

I think you guys are mistaken. I went through Infantry OSUT in '99. We all started as 11Xs, then most became 11Bs. Some became 11Cs (mortars, actually indirect fire infantry technically), some became 11Ms (mechanized infantry) for Bradleys and such, and some became 11Hs (heavy infantry) the guys in the HMMWVs with the TOWS and Mk19s.

Perhaps you guys are mixing up and calling them 11Ds because they usually went to D company.

OP- sorry for the highjack, just trying to sort something out.

They're probably using Raufoss rounds. They're 2-3 moa in the M107.

That was my thought exactly. Spotter was not giving much support.

I'm talking about almost 15 years before you went through. We did not start as 11X. Everyone signed up for B, C, or D prior to having the first D.I. start yelling at you. "D" at the time was TOW gunner. So I'll admit my answer is dated. I had no such thing as MOUT training either. </div></div>

There were only 3 Infantry options when I went through in 2004. 11B, 11C and 11X. Most of the 11X we had at reception went to 11Cs because that was the first company to show up for pick-up. we didn't have an 11B company show up the first Friday we were there. I was 11B contract, so myself, most of the rest of the 11Bs and whatever 11X didn't get picked up went with us the following week when 2 11B companies picked up. the 11Cs were one whole separate company. Never saw or talked to any of them during training. Our company was 11B, 11X and 18X. We did not conduct any TOW, Javelin or Mechanized training. I don't remember any MOUT either.

There were some SF track (18X) guys, they were on some long term contract, went through 11B school, Airborne, RIP/Pre-Ranger, Ranger, then off to SF land for stuff. Not a lot of them made it that far. Heard there were commonly a lot of failures during or after Airborne or Pre-Ranger. Since they voided their contract with the Army at that point, they were sent out as 11B "Needs of the Army"
